Former CSSHL and current Medicine Hat Tigers forward Gavin McKenna has been named the November CSSHL WHL Alumni Player of the Month.
The Whitehorse, YT forward played 13 games in November tallying 11 goals, 21 assists and 32 points including a six-point game to start the month and a hat-trick to close it out. Overall, McKenna leads the WHL with 37 assists and 55 points in 27 games this season.
Last year McKenna would pace all WHL rookies with 63 assists, while his 34 goals and 97 points were second among all rookies. McKenna would earn CHL and WHL Rookie of the Year honours while being named to the WHL (Central) First All-Star Team.
Internationally, McKenna represented Team Canada Red at the 2023 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge where he was named to the All-Star team after recording a team best eight points in seven games. He was also suit up for Team Canada at the 2024 World U18 Championships, leading the tournament with 10 goals and coming second with 20 points. He would help Team Canada capture gold while being named to the All-Star Team and a Top 3 Player of the Tournament on his team.
Selected first overall at the 2022 WHL Draft, McKenna spent three seasons in the CSSHL. He joined the league in 2020/21 with the RHA Kelowna U15 Prep team but did not play any games due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The following season he would play for the RHA Kelowna U18 Prep team, as an underage player, leading the entire division with 42 assists and 65 points in 35 games.
After being selected by the Tigers, McKenna moved closer to Medicine Hat, joining South Alberta Hockey Academy (SAHA) where he would capture the CSSHL U18 MVP Award after producing a division high 37 goals, 38 assists and 75 points in in just 26 games. He would also play 16 WHL games as an affiliate player with the Tigers, recording 4 goals and 14 assists.
McKenna is considered a top prospect for the 2026 NHL Draft.
