The 麻豆传媒入口 (CSSHL) is excited to announce the three winners of the Coach of the Month Award for November: Pat Lenehan, Annette Jensen, and Robert/Jagger Dirk.

For the 2024/25 season the CSSHL is proud to introduce the Coach of the Month Award for the three different CSSHL divisions: Eastern, West Female, and West Male.

This award is aimed at recognizing the incredible coaches within the CSSHL and acknowledges their hard work, dedication, commitment, leadership and impact on the game both on and off the ice.

We would like to congratulate these three coaches, who were all nominated by their programs, for their hard work in the month of November

East Division –听 Pat Lenehan, Okanagan Hockey Ontario:听

“Since joining Okanagan Hockey Ontario, Pat has been an integral part in building our culture. He understands what it means to build relationships with student-athletes and to make sure they feel supported. He has created an environment where our student athletes can be themselves, be held accountable and know their coaches care for them while pushing them to be their best. His work ethic is second to none and he goes above and beyond each day and on travel weekends to make sure the players have everything they need to be successful. Lastly, he represents the Okanagan Hockey Group and the CSSHL with class and respect.”

West Female Division –听 Annette Jensen, Edge School:

Annette was nominated by fellow CSSHL member program Balmoral Hall School program, who had the following to say:

“This month, Edge hosted the Female U18 Prep Division for a league showcase weekend, which ran incredibly smoothly. I’m nominating Annette for going above and beyond to assist another team and player in need. When we landed in Calgary, one of our players hockey bags didn’t arrive with the rest of the teams, and in the morning it still wasn’t anywhere to be found. I got on the phone with Annette less than 6 hours before game time to inquire about getting extra equipment to piece together for our player to still be able to participate in games that weekend. Annette went above and beyond to help find gear for our player, all while she was coaching her own teams game! It’s moments like these that remind us all of the importance to support each other, even if we’re playing against each other in games, we’re all on the same team when it comes to representing our league. Annette is a great ambassador for our league and she is very well deserving of the recognition as Coach of the Month.”

West Male Division – Robert & Jagger Dirk, Okanagan Hockey Academy:

“The West Male Division Coach of the Month is the father/son duo of Coaches Robert and Jagger Dirk of the OHA U18 Prep team. Their exemplary leadership and dedication to the team demonstrate the highest standards of coaching and mentorship.

The father-son dynamic between Coaches Robert Dirk and Jagger Dirk is a testament to their exceptional relationship, as well as their ability to work seamlessly together to support the growth and development of their players. Despite the usual challenges associated with high-level hockey 鈥 including short bench rotations due to illness, injuries, and player movements between affiliate teams 鈥 these coaches have consistently remained positive, encouraging, and focused on fostering an environment of learning and growth. When the team experiences setbacks, whether in practice or during games, their approach is constructive. Instead of reacting with frustration, they engage in thoughtful analysis, identifying areas for improvement and focusing on solutions.

They maintain high expectations and demand hard work from their players, yet they do so in a fair, unemotional manner. Any corrections made are constructive and without lingering negativity. There are no grudges; the focus is always on improvement and moving forward.

A noteworthy example of their attention to detail and commitment to player safety occurred during a recent practice. When rapid-fire shots were taken before the goalie had time to properly set up, Coach Robert made sure to address the situation, not only with the individual involved but also with the entire team. This commitment to maintaining a safe practice environment is something that often gets overlooked in hockey, but Coaches Robert and Jagger prioritize it, ensuring that all players, especially goalies, are protected.”

    • What are some of the things your program does to provide educational support?
      • Each student has a guidance counselor assigned to them. They have the ability to book meetings to see their guidance counsellor. They help support the student athlete through course selection, pathway planning and provide an extra layer of support if students need academic support.
      • Students have an opportunity to attend extra help sessions with Henry Street High School before school, during lunch or after school. Peer tutoring and resources are also available upon request.
    • How are grades monitored and how often?
      • Students participate in an academic check-in monthly with their coaching staff. We also receive midterm and final grades from the school. If students are struggling, teachers often reach out with updates as well.
    • How are courses and the graduation path for student athletes chosen?
      • Guidance counsellors work with the student athletes and their families to plan their pathway to graduation and earning the Ontario High School Diploma.
    • Do you have an academic probation policy?
      • Academic probation is a case-by-case situation. We work on being proactive and use academic probation as a last resort. Students are given opportunities to catch up on their work if they are falling behind in study halls. If a situation arises that a student is not keeping up on work, they will be assigned extra study halls until their work is completed. In cases of academic misconduct, games may be taken away from student-athletes. Students, coaches, management, parents, and teachers are all involved in the academic process.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE

  • Our athletes who need room and board are billeted among a great group of local families. Our billets provide a safe and supportive environment that our student-athletes can call home. We have had great success through our billeting program and feel that it has been an integral part of the growth of our Academy.
  • Okanagan Hockey strives to make our student-athletes feel right at home while developing their emotional intelligence. Our student-athletes will develop key life skills by living away from home, such as time management skills, cooking and laundry, self-advocacy, relationship skills, appreciation of new cultures, and controlled independence.

STUDENT ATHLETE HEALTH

    • How are injuries and sick student athletes monitored?
      • We have full-time Certified Athletic Therapists staffed daily in our state-of-the-art facilities for injury assessment, rehabilitation, and coverage during training and games. We have a team physician who comes to the academy weekly and is booked by appointment through an athletic therapist. Student-athlete monitoring is typically completed with daily check-ins but can differ depending on the injury or illness.
      • Parent communication will take place for student-athletes who are injured for any extended period, including updates on their progress or changes in their injury status. Parent communication will also take place when any sort of physician contact occurs, such as general check-ups, walk-in clinics, or emergency room visits. This is especially helpful for families that are not in town so that they can be kept up to date on each step of the injury or illness recovery process.

The 麻豆传媒入口 (CSSHL) has announced that its Governors have granted approval for six CSSHL member programs to operate new teams in the 2024-25 season after they received approval from their Hockey Canada Branches.

鈥淪ince our inception the CSSHL鈥檚 goal has been supporting Hockey Canada鈥檚 objective to facilitate the integration of Grade 8-12 education-based hockey/accredited school programing within the Hockey Canada programming model. The addition of these teams allows for that goal to continue with greater retention in our member programs,鈥 said CSSHL COO Kevin Goodwin.

Calgary International Hockey Academy (Calgary, AB) has been granted a U15 team for the 2024/25 season. CIHA currently operates a U17 Prep and U18 Prep team.

Now in their second CSSHL season, Indigenous Sports Academy (Saskatoon, SK) will add a U18 Prep team. ISA currently operates just one team this season in the U17 Prep division.

OHA Edmonton (Edmonton, AB) has added a Female U18 Prep team to go along with their full complement of teams on the male side.

Okanagan Hockey Ontario (Whitby, ON) has been granted a U16 team to compete in the Eastern U17 division. OHO currently has a U18 team playing in the CSSHL Eastern Division.

RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (Winnipeg, MB) will add both a U15 and U17 Prep team for next season. RHA Winnipeg currently has teams in the U15 Prep, U17 Prep, U18 Prep and Female U18 Prep divisions.

STAR Hockey Academy (Seattle, WA) will also add two teams for next season with the additions of a U15 Prep and U17 Prep team. The program is currently in its first season in the CSSHL with one team in the U15 division.

Eastern division program Champions Hockey Academy (Fredericton, NB) will transition from a U17 team to a U18 team next season.

With the addition of the eight teams, and the earlier announcement of the addition of five new programs, the CSSHL will consist of 125 teams and 37 member programs for the 2024/25 season.

Former Okanagan Hockey Ontario (OHO) student-athlete Zechariah Thomas and his company Swift Hockey are set to appear on the season 18 premier of the hit Canadian TV show Dragon鈥檚 Den.

Thomas spent the 2018/19 season with OHO, their first in the 麻豆传媒入口 (CSSHL). The Oshawa, ON defenseman would record 12 points in 15 games with the team that season. He would go on to spend one season playing junior hockey in the U.S.A. before returning to Canada for three seasons of junior, including two games in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) with the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.

But it is off the ice where Thomas has found immense success. 鈥淭he beginning of COVID when there wasn’t really hockey, I kind of decided to do a little research, get into some different type of businesses, e-commerce and drop shipping types of businesses,鈥 said Thomas. 鈥淪o, I started selling teddy bears and everything and it went really well from there, and then when I had the opportunity, I decided to start Swift Hockey.鈥

Thomas created with the goal of making quality, affordable hockey sticks. With the cost of an 鈥榚lite鈥 senior stick from major brands like CCM, Bauer and Warrior hitting highs of $400, Swift Hockey has found a way to offer consumers a much more affordable option, one that is NHL Certified, with their prices ranging from $110-$150.

鈥淭he bigger companies are really price gouging on their sticks and it’s unaffordable for anyone to really play hockey,鈥 added Thomas. Thomas has found a reliable manufacture based in China that allows him to keep his prices low, though he notes his lower-mark up compared to the major brands is what sets him apart. This lower mark-up is something Thomas plans to keep in place even as the brand grows.

Former OHO stududent-athlete Zechariah Thomas and Swift Hockey will be on CBC at 8:00pm EST on Thursday, September 21, 2023. – (photo by Game Day Photography)

To date Swift Hockey has sold roughly 3,000 sticks, with the majority being in the Durham, ON region, but the company has reached European, and American markets. Thomas attributes part of his reach in the market to his time at OHO.

鈥淢y time at OHO was 5 years ago now, I still have friends from that team. It really helps build the business itself and give it a good launch having people supporting me from Quebec, from the USA, from France, from Europe, all over the place everybody’s supporting me.鈥

鈥淚t is always great to see one of our alumni succeed in the game of life. During his time at OHO in 2018/19, Zechariah was a key contributor to our program throughout the year and the contributions from him and his teammates in our inaugural year are always remembered. We are proud of Zechariah and look forward to continuing to watch and support him reach his goals,鈥 added OHO General Manager Paul Pascuzzi.

Playing for OHO in its inaugural CSSHL season, Thomas also learned the ins-and-outs of how a business operates.

鈥淚 really saw a lot with the way the program should run a little bit on the business side, because I was able to see all their flaws and strengths because it was their first year. I really, really loved my experience at OHO. My coaches were great, I still have some coaches that I still talk to this day that coached me back then, it really showed me life away from home. When we traveled to BC, PEI and all those places, I was really able to see different parts of the country that I never saw before, and it really got me ready for junior also.鈥

While sticks are currently the main focus of Swift Hockey, Thomas mentioned the desire to expand the business with goalie sticks, skates and other gear, aiming to make the sport affordable for everyone.

鈥淯ltimately the dream and goal are to make hockey more affordable, and sticks are one of the biggest, biggest, biggest factors in hockey not being affordable. I really do want to compete with other companies, maybe make the other companies go down in price, and I really want Swift Hockey to take control of the market.鈥

You can catch Thomas and Swift Hockey on CBC at 8:00pm EST on Thursday, September 21, 2023.
