Located in North Vancouver, the North Shore Warriors joined the 麻豆传媒入口 (CSSHL) in 2016/17, and have since won two U15 Western Championships.

PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY AND MISSION STATEMENT

The North Shore Warriors Hockey Academy is committed to development in a culture of education, leadership, and sport excellence. Our environment of accountability focuses on the habits required to develop a successful student athlete on and off the ice. We live by the Warrior way of respect, relentless, and resilient.

LIST OF TEAMS

The North Shore Warriors compete in the CSSHL with 6 teams across 6 divisions. A complete pathway to graduation model is available for student athletes in grades 7 through 12

  • U15 AAA
  • U15 Prep
  • U17 AAA
  • U17 Prep
  • U18 Prep
  • U18 Female Prep

LOCATION AND YEAR THE PROGRAM ENTERED THE CSSHL

The Warriors entered the CSSHL in 2016, formerly known as the West Van Warriors Hockey Academy (2016-2021). Moving to facility and education providers into North Vancouver in 2021, the Academy rebranded as the North Shore Warriors Hockey Academy to better reflect the entire region in which we call home.

EDUCATION

Our partner school is North Shore Academy (NSA), which is The North Shore鈥檚 School for Athletes. NSA opened as a private school in 2021 to provide custom course curriculum and scheduling for high-performance student athletes. Led by Education Director and a former CHL, USport Student Athlete, and Hockey Captain Mr. Mark Tremaine, there is a strong school culture of performance, adaptability, and relatability.

Student enrollment consists of baseball, hockey, tennis, golf, skiing, soccer, and martial arts athletes and the NSA staff does an exceptional job to support the diverse needs of our Warriors partnership.

  • What are some of the things your program does to provide educational support?
    • The Warriors Hockey Academy and NSA staff develop the hockey and education schedule in parallel each year to create a supportive and integrated approach to learning. This means student athletes never miss a day of academic delivery due to their hockey schedule, and additional support is provided throughout the hockey season by teachers and staff around key education dates and deliverables.
    • Additionally, teachers, teaching assistants, tutors, and academic advisors are hired and supplemented privately by the Academy for education support and curriculum delivery. Technology-enabled classrooms and digital learning platforms for NSA students make study halls easy and convenient while traveling to showcases and tournaments.
    • Asynchronous pace options are available for motivated student athletes. Some NSA students have completed three grade-advanced courses inside of one 鈥榯raditional鈥 school year, which highlights the efficiency of the NSA schedule, and makes the transition to junior hockey easier with a lighter courseload.
    • Leadership Friday at NSA is a regularly scheduled day for character development covering a wide range of initiatives including: community involvement, volunteerism, guest speakers, nutritionists and dieticians, expanded interests, financial literacy, sports psychology, mental health training, and fostering healthy relationships.
  • How are grades monitored and how often?
    • There is an NSA student athlete dashboard that is readily available and accessible for academic results and accountability. Assignments, quizzes, and tests are graded with real time feedback provided to student athletes/families who no longer have to wait for a report card to make adjustments.
    • Academic monitoring is done weekly with updates to coaching staff provided on an ongoing basis.
  • How are courses and the graduation path for student athletes chosen?
    • NSA provides a wide range of electives and diverse course options for students in Grades 7 through 12.
    • Prospective Warrior student athletes apply and meet with NSA Registrar and Admissions Director, Ms. Lanita Moore, to review academic standing prior to intake acceptance and registration. Course selection and electives are chosen based on Ministry of Education requirements, combined with student competencies, interests, and proficiency.
    • Tom McEvay is the Academic Advisor and in conjunction with NSA staff, Tom meets with student athletes for course selection, monitoring, and academic progression. Mr. McEvay has over 35 years of experience as a school Principal and now as an Advisor to help students understand their potential education pathways. Tom has placed students into Canadian Universities, American Colleges, and Ivy League schools and his services have proven invaluable to Warrior student athletes.
    • In keeping with an accountability driven environment, neglecting education requirements will result in the reduction and/or removal of athletic privileges and programming with the Warriors.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE

  • Do you offer a billeting program or a dormitory for non-local student athletes?
    • The North Shore Warriors offer a billeting program for student athletes. Our Parent and Billet Family Liaison assists with student athletes moving to the Lower Mainland from outside the region. A billet experience can provide lifelong friendships and develop many great life lessons. It is expected that billet students adjust and adapt to new family norms and house rules in a respectful manner and engage with new family schedules, traditions, and expectations.

STUDENT ATHLETE HEALTH

  • How are injuries and sick student athletes monitored?
    • The Academy Director of Sports Medicine, Scott Marchant handles student athlete injury prevention, monitoring, and rehabilitation programs. Scott has previous experience with the WHL Vancouver Giants, MLS Vancouver Whitecaps, CFL BC Lions, and has been with the Warriors since its鈥 inception in 2016. His experience, dedication, and professionalism has been a valuable resource for Academy student athletes and families.
    • Scott oversees bench staff for AT and game management, and also attends the Academy each week for student athlete injury management and post-weekend treatments.
    • In conjunction with Scott鈥檚 clinic Accel Health and Athletics, HeadCheck Health is a partner organization that provides all concussion testing and an integrated platform for injury tracking, monitoring, and athlete rehabilitation.

SCHEDULE

  • What days the daily schedule look like for a student athlete in your program?
    • All Warrior student athletes and teams belong to a morning or afternoon training cohort. The Morning cohort (U15 AAA/U15 Prep) trains from 800am-1145am and the afternoon cohort (U17 AAA/U17 Prep/U18 Prep/U18 Female Prep) trains from 1200pm-400pm. Athletes spend 3.5-4 hours at North Shore Winter Club and 3.5-4 hours at NSA.
    • All hockey development and education scheduling is conducted between 800am and 400pm weekdays which provides ideal lifestyle and family balance.
    • Student athletes receive daily on-ice training, off-ice training, video coaching, and take part in player and positional development meetings. Additional icetime is provided for skill development sessions on a weekly basis to work on player deficiencies.
    • The cohort block scheduling allows for additional development and player AP opportunities with other teams that are in their training cohort. For example, U15 AAA players often receive double practise ice, training, or skill development with the U15 Prep team.
    • The Academy strives for a 45-50 game season with all teams. This includes CSSHL Regular Season, CSSHL Playoffs, and Exhibition Games/Tournaments.
    • Warriors student athletes receive 450+ hockey specific development hours for Student Athletes. This takes place over the entirety of our development season which runs from September into June each year to coincide with our academic schedule at NSA.

EDUCATION

  • Partner School (Grades 10-12):听John Maland High School
  • Partner School (Grade 8-9):听Riverview Junior High School
  • What are some of the things your program does to provide educational support?
    • Our student-athletes integrate into classes with the rest of the regular school population at both John Maland High School and Riverview Middle School. To ensure education does not get lost in the background, NAX utilizes an Academic Director, Charla Ceulemans, who works to ensure that both the long-term and short-term academic planning for our student-athletes is properly organized. Relatively small class sizes (average class size is 24 students), strong and supportive teachers, and teachers who travel on the road with our teams ensure our student-athletes receive plenty of quality instruction from their teachers. While traveling, study halls are scheduled daily to ensure our student-athletes have time to make up for missed class time. All team practices and game schedules work specifically with the educational commitments and expectations of our student-athletes and it is our expectation that all teams within our program be finished their daily routines (school and hockey) by 5:30pm each day; thereby, allowing student-athletes some much needed time for proper rest and the ability to maintain a 鈥楲IFE鈥 away from the rink.
  • How are grades monitored and how often?
    • Our coaches communicate every week with both teachers and the student-athletes themselves to ensure the student-athlete is continuing to excel to their highest level in the classroom. Our Director of Academics also ensures that each of our athletes is on top of their academics by regularly monitoring and communicating with teachers and students.
  • How are courses and the graduation path for student athletes chosen?
    • Our Academic Director sits down with each and every student-athlete when they join the program to map out a graduation plan specific to that student-athletes needs and goals. John Maland High School is also recognized as an official SAT Test Writing Center.
  • Do you have an academic probation policy?
    • NAX works efficiently to track the progress of our student-athletes in all of their classes. We do not ask our student-athletes to reach or maintain a specific overall grade average. Instead we expect and require them to meet or exceed their academic standard to the best of their ability. A failure to do so results in missed practices or games until the student-athlete meets their individual standards.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE

  • Do you offer a billeting program or a dormitory for non-local student athletes?
    • Our billet program is designed to copy that of many of the top junior teams in Alberta. Student-athletes requiring billets are encouraged to stay with family or friends if possible, but we understand this isn鈥檛 always an option. If a student-athlete does not have family or friends to stay with, we help set them up with one of our host-families, allowing both parties to meet and decide whether it will be a good fit before any commitments are made. It is important to us that both the student-athlete, their family, and the host-family all feel comfortable in the situation.
  • What kind of life skills do the student athletes learn by living with billets?
    • As our student-athletes progress to Junior/University, staying at home is often no longer an option and billeting or dorm rooms are required. Our billet program allows our student-athletes the ability to prepare for these challenges at a younger age, while their support system is still strong. Our student-athletes learn respect for others and their homes, independence, how to operate in a new environment, and the importance of family and structure. Our student-athletes also build lifelong connections with their billet families.

STUDENT ATHLETE HEALTH

  • How are injuries and sick student athletes monitored?
    • University of Alberta Sport Performance Coach and Rehabilitation Specialist Matt Yaworski is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and Certified Athletic Therapist. He is present at our facilities every week and either works with our student-athletes or directs them to the appropriate specialist based on his assessment. The program employs Nicole Wlasichuk (Certified EMR and a Bachelor鈥檚 Degree in Kinesiology) to handle all game day, and day to day training needs.

SCHEDULE

  • What does the daily schedule look like for an NAX student athlete?
    • Our student athletes practice Monday to Friday (travel dependent) at our brand-new state of the art facility in Devon, AB. After practice our student-athletes are transported to school where they train with Tyler Palmer, Barry Butt and staff. Our student-athletes then participate in the academic portion of their schedule at school in the afternoons. At the conclusion of classes our student-athletes are provided transportation to central drop off locations, with a goal to have them home for dinner and evenings with their families or host-families.
  • How many games can your teams expect to play?
    • Our teams play 45-55 games a season, which includes the CSSHL regular season and Championships, exhibition games and tournaments.
  • What does the on and off ice training look like?
    • NAX incorporates a variety of technical skills coaches, along with each team coaching staff, to assist with player development in the program. Practices are set up in advance to ensure an even balance between individual skills training (skating, shooting, passing, etc.) and team structure (systems, concepts, etc.) to ensure our student-athletes can achieve both individual and team success and growth. Off ice, each team works closely with the program鈥檚 strength and conditioning coach, as well as various other off ice seminars such as video work, mental training and nutrition

    • Pilot Mound Collegiate Institute (Grade 9-12)
  • What are some of the things your program does to provide educational support?
    • Daily study halls while student athletes are in the dorms, as well as planned school sessions on the road. Our dorm parents work closely with the school and work as liaisons with the teaching staff. Teachers inform our dorm parent and coaches if any schoolwork is missed, and student athletes will miss practice if additional time with teachers is required. We also have tutoring available as needed.听 Our academic policy (below) provides more information on the educational supports provided.
  • How are grades monitored and how often?
    • Monitoring of grades is ongoing. Report cards (which occur four times per year) are shared with our student athletes鈥 parents, our dorm staff, as well as the coaching staff. Sign-off sheets are provided by the players to coaches which include comments from each teacher as an update of progress in their courses.
  • How are courses and the graduation path for student athletes chosen?
    • Courses are chosen by the students (along with parents) at the end and/or the beginning of each school year for academic year. • Do you have an academic probation policy?
    • We have an academic policy in place which is a partnership with PMCI and PMHA.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE

  • Do you offer a billeting program or a dormitory for non-local student athletes?
    • PMHA provides student athlete housing in both the new and existing single occupancy dormitory rooms, with full access to state-of-the-art common areas, dining area, and fitness center.听 Located in very close proximity to both the arena complex and the high school, everything our student-athletes require to succeed off the ice is found in the Buffaloes dormitory.
  • What kind of life skills to the student athletes learn by living in the dorms or with billets?
    • Pilot Mound Hockey Academy fosters the ability to work as part of a team environment. Student athletes leaving PMHA will have gained strong life skills, as well as leadership capabilities that will support them throughout their eventual life pathways.
    • Our student athletes are regularly connected with community volunteer opportunities.
    • Our student athletes are regularly involved in the operation and cleaning of the complex, lending a helping hand, assisting with community events and fundraisers, helping wherever needed on a regular basis. PMHA staff, directors and owners are all rooted deeply in the community and feel that volunteerism builds character, and it is just part of being in the Pilot Mound Community; this sentiment is an expectation of all the student athletes.

STUDENT ATHLETE HEALTH

  • How are injuries and sick student athletes monitored?
    • The Pilot Mound Hockey Academy management team monitors all injured and sick student athletes. The management team consists of our team physiotherapist, sports medicine doctor, coaches, managers, and our dorm parents. Each injured student athlete鈥檚 recovery is dependent on the injury. We have access to general practitioners, chiropractor鈥檚, physiotherapists, and an orthopedic specialist. We follow their instruction as to a student athletes鈥 recovery timeline.
    • Concussion Baseline Testing & Return To Play Services: All PMHA athletes complete a baseline concussion test with one of our physiotherapists or athletic therapists in September. Our medical team keep baseline results on file in case they require it for reference should an athlete receive a concussion in the season. If an athlete does get a concussion in a game or practice, athletes report to the clinic for a concussion test with one of our medical practitioners. Once the practitioner determines the severity of a concussion, they provide instructions and information on next steps before an athlete will return to play. Our return-to-play guidelines include details on the extent that one can participate in class, gym and on-ice activities 鈥 all of which will be specific to one鈥檚 concussion symptoms.

SCHEDULE

  • What does the daily schedule look like for a student athlete in your program?
    • Student athletes schooling, as well as on and off ice training, is incorporated throughout their school day.听 After dinner, there is a mandatory study hall from 6:30-7:30pm and once that is concluded students have some free time for their own activities, which can be some free ice time at the arena, going fishing or simply relaxing. There are mandatory team activities setup on certain days that can include volleyball, pickleball, yoga, volunteering or community events.

    • All of our high school students meet with a counsellor to ensure that they are on the right path for graduation.听 We also go over the students MyPass which is a portal for graduation and post-secondary in Alberta.听 By using the interim reports and the interim marks posted by the teachers we are well aware of how the student athletes are doing.
  • Do you have an academic probation policy?
    • We use the above process to monitor where our athletes are at and if they are struggling, we consider that a first warning to improve the grades which may mean missing programming.听 If the mark improves over the course of a set period of time, then the student is free and clear to practice and play.听 If they do not improve then we look at involving a tutor and set times for that to occur.听 If after the first two strategies if the student still is struggling and is in the proper stream for the subject, then we take away practices and games until the effort to improve is provided.听 Usually, the problem isn’t the intelligence of the student but the willingness to complete assignments or quizzes and tests.听 When students need to stay at school, we have a dedicated room called ELO that has two teachers in it to help students with their work and proctor quizzes and exams.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE

Our athletes who need room and board are billeted among a great group of local families. Our billets provide a safe and supportive environment that our student-athletes can call home. We have had great success through our billeting program and feel that it has been an integral part of the growth of our Academy.

Okanagan Hockey strives to make our student-athletes feel right at home while developing their emotional intelligence. Our student-athletes will develop key life skills by living away from home, such as time management skills, cooking and laundry, self-advocacy, relationship skills, appreciation of new cultures, and controlled independence.

STUDENT ATHLETE HEALTH

We have Certified Athletic Therapists, led by our manager of Athletic Therapy Dwayne Laing. staffed daily for injury assessment, rehabilitation, and coverage during training and games. We have access to Dr. Erika Persson – Pediatric Sports Medicine Practitioner & Chris Holt – physiotherapist , who are both on site at a clinic within Vimy Ridge Academy.听 and can be booked by appointment.

Student-athlete monitoring is typically completed with daily check-ins but can differ depending on the injury or illness.

Parent communication will take place for student-athletes who are injured for any extended period, including updates on their progress or changes in their injury status. Parent communication will also take place when any sort of physician contact occurs, such as general check-ups, walk-in clinics, or emergency room visits. This is especially helpful for families that are not in town so that they can be kept up to date on each step of the injury or illness recovery process.

Located in Victoria, BC, Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (PCHA) currently competes in all five western male divisions after joining the 麻豆传媒入口 (CSSHL) in 2014.

PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY:

鈥淣urturing today鈥檚 student-athlete for tomorrow鈥檚 world.鈥

With this in mind 鈥 each day our coaches, staff and educational team focus on supporting our student-athletes to achieve their dreams, both academically and athletically, by challenging them in a supportive and caring environment.

鈥淎s a staff we try to have a positive impact on each young man鈥檚 life and hope the character development and life lessons learned at PCHA will stay with them well beyond their career on the ice.鈥

OVERVIEW:

Pacific Coast Hockey Academy is a formally recognized and officially sanctioned Hockey Canada Accredited School (HCAS) and was the first of its kind on Vancouver Island.

PCHA is a high-performance hockey academy that has combined an education-based hockey curriculum focused on individual skill development for today鈥檚 elite level player. Our program provides its students with exceptional coaching, training, and skill development, along with a highly competitive path as proud members of the CSSHL.

LOCATION:

Located on scenic Vancouver Island, PCHA calls Langford, British Columbia home. A suburb of Victoria, with its mild climate, breathtaking mountains, forest, beaches and ocean – the local surroundings provide an ideal backdrop for year-round outdoor training and activities. In fact, the City of Langford was just named the 鈥淢ost Livable鈥 place in Canada -topping the list of more than 150 Communities across the nation.

鈥淧CHA is very proud of our facilities and to call City Centre Park and the state-of-the-art Westhills Arena home.鈥 The City of Langford鈥檚 goal is to build a National sports capital and be the home of high-performance sports in Canada. As proud members of the prestigious 麻豆传媒入口 (CSSHL), PCHA works hard at combining academic and athletic success鈥 as 鈥渘ational leaders in education-based hockey鈥 on Vancouver Island.

PCHA uses the Eagle Ridge dry floor and weight room facilities for all their off-ice training and conditioning, and the Westhills Arena for all on-ice practices and home games. The PCHA Sea Devils have their own custom locker rooms and equipment storage with laundry facilities, boardroom for video review, meetings and seminars, as well as head offices all on site at the Westhills Arena.

HISTORY:

Pacific Coast Hockey Academy opened its doors in 2013 and became members of the CSSHL for the 2014-15 season

鈥淔rom our humble beginnings in 2013 as an independent Elite-15 team, to now operating five high-performance teams in the CSSHL (U15AAA, U15 Prep, U17AAA, U17 Prep, U18 Prep) 鈥 PCHA has built a program to support the needs of local high-performance student athletes, as well as the dozens of Out of Province and International students who have moved to Victoria to attend our academy over the years.鈥

DEVELOPMENT MODEL:

PCHA is a 10-month education-based hockey program with a focus on individual skill development for the elite player. Our doors open following labour Day weekend in Sept and academy closes for exams at the end of the school year in June.

  • Teams have daily on ice practices and skill development (5 days a week) as well as off-ice strength and conditioning for ten months. While many programs scale back in the spring, we continue with daily ice and workouts through till the end of the school year.
  • There is consistency in development between our teams as we employ a full time Head of Player Development and skills coach who is on the ice with all three teams each day and works closely with our coaching staff.
  • Each individual player completes a personalized Long Term Athlete Development Plan (LTADP) to identify strengths and weaknesses and focus on areas of improvement to meet their goals on and off the ice.

PCHA is also excited to have partnered with Power Edge Pro (PEP) 鈥 the proven leader in skill development. Used by over 100 of today鈥檚 top NHL players, Power Edge Pro is a superior training system that produces noticeable improvements in just a couple of sessions – no other development system in the world has graduated more players to the听NHL.

  • PCHA players have weekly PEP training sessions throughout the 10-month season.

EDUCATION:

PCHA has enjoyed a successful partnership with School District 62 (Sooke) for 11 years and has always strived to strengthen and build upon this relationship. Over time it has been or goal to work together to continuously improve our educational offering and to exceed the academic guidelines and standards put forth by Hockey Canada as an officially sanctioned Hockey Canada Accredited School.

We have been working hard to provide the best academic experience, while providing the support that is needed for a student-athlete with a rigorous training and travel schedule to succeed. SD62, has identified that there are different needs and demands on high-performance student-athletes in the district, and with this in mind, opened the doors of Qelensen 谩, Len Secondary (the SD62 Sport School) in 2022.

  • Registration is handled by SD62 (Sooke) Sport School, with one counselor assigned for all PCHA students to help streamline the registration and course selection process and improve communication.
  • All PCHA students attend Qelensen 谩, Len Secondary with their teammates and other students from high-performance academies within the school district. There is a dedicated Sports School teaching staff for these student-athletes. This staff is aware of all training and travel, thus, better equipped to support the needs of our students.
  • Smaller class sizes 鈥 better teacher to student ratio.
  • 3 tutorial blocks weekly for academic support Mon-Thurs (times depending on the student鈥檚 grade) built into the daily timetable.
  • U17/U18 Players transition to School for their afternoon classes, following their daily training and development at PCHA. Classes will end at 3:20 pm, to allow students that commute to still get home at a reasonable hour. Our U15 teams attend school in the morning and transition to gym and on-ice development for the afternoon, with their day ending at 3:40pm
  • Students take all their core courses and electives by face-to-face instruction delivered by SD62 teachers and tutorial staff.
  • PCHA students can take additional online courses through Distributed Learning (DL) that will be supported by the Sports School academic staff during tutorial blocks.

鈥淚 am very excited about the new Sooke Sports School, and academic changes that will better support the educational needs of PCHA鈥檚 students, and the demands of today鈥檚 high-performance athletes. We are looking forward to the new changes as we continue to support this long-term partnership, and the growth of a dedicated Sports School in the Westshore鈥听听 Wayne Kelly听鈥 SD62 Principal of Academies

  • PCHA is grateful that the Sooke School District (SD62) had identified a unique opportunity that benefits our high-performance student-athletes and creates an environment to learn with like-minded individuals. The new Sport School, and the district鈥檚 ability to adapt, will continue to strengthen our partnership with SD62 and improve the academic delivery to PCHA students.

At PCHA we are just as proud of our success鈥 in the classroom as on the ice 鈥 and are proud to claim three (3) CSSHL Scholastic Player of the Year awards in the past few seasons.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE:

PCHA offers a billeting program for our out-of-town players. We have a residential life coordinator that works with families and billets to find the best living situation for our players while attending PCHA.

Billet families provide our players a home away from home while attending PCHA. Along with providing room and board, meals, and transportation when needed, the billet family provides an environment of support and trust for the players. The billet family in many cases feels like they have gained a new member of the family 鈥 one whose career they can follow as they move on to play junior, college or even professional hockey.

  • Our billet coordinator is responsible for recruiting billet families, coordinating communication and liaising between families, billets and academy staff. There is a comprehensive vetting procedure for prospective billet families which includes criminal record checks and home site visits.

STUDENT ATHLETE HEALTH:

PCHA has developed relationships with program doctors, dentists and medical听personnel to support the health and well-being of all our players.

We have a partnership with听Victoria Sports Therapy, and Motus Physiotherapy clinic for all our players medical treatment and rehabilitation needs, as well as听Parkway Dental Group located a short walk from the Pacific Coast Hockey Academy and City听Centre Park.

  • Victoria Sports Therapy provides or arranges all Athletic Trainer鈥檚 (AT) for PCHA鈥檚 games and tournaments.
  • Athletic therapists and physio communicate with team coaches, strength and conditioning coaches, and parents regarding player injuries, rehabilitation and return to play protocol.
  • PCHA provides an AT for triage on Mondays in-season, to assess injuries that may have occurred in competion over the weekend.

    • George Elliott Secondary School (Grades 9-12) (GESS)
    • HS Grenda Middle School (Grades 5-8) (GMS)
  • What are some of the things your program does to provide educational support?
    • The RINK School Liaison is the first point of contact for school education and behaviour concerns for RINK students, for George Elliot Secondary School (GESS) & Grenda Middle School (GMS) teachers, and RINK Parents. The GESS/GMS Counsellor is first point of contact for RINK. The counsellor will guide course selections and school credits for student-athletes and will assist students/parents to source tutors as needed.
  • How are grades monitored and how often?
    • Parent/Teacher interviews are conducted through by the current teacher four times a year. RINK School Liaison is in touch with all teachers at the start of each term (8 terms) every five weeks. If a student falls behind or is struggling, the teacher will contact the RINK School Liaison. Schools issue Report Cards four times in the school year. The RINK School Liaison receives a record of all students鈥 marks. Grades at RHA Kelowna are monitored by teachers and information is relayed to our School Liaison. Any concerns with grade percentage, missed assignments or testing are reviewed with our coaches and in turn players are communicated with and appropriate direction is decided upon. All players must retain a 70% grade average/developing to maintain participation in all hockey activities. Parents can also check at any time with their son or daughter鈥檚 teachers on grades or progress.
  • How are courses and the graduation path for student athletes chosen?
    • Courses are chosen by the students at the end of each school year for the upcoming academic year. School counsellors assist and guide all our student athletes in choosing the necessary courses for their future academic and career paths.
  • Do you have an academic probation policy?
    • Student athletes are to maintain a 70% average/Developing in school. Should students fall below, the teacher will contact the RINK School Liaison. The RINK School Liaison will work with the students/parents to arrange a tutor. The Coach will be advised should additional academic time be needed to maintain that average and retain the program鈥檚 academic standards.

RESIDENTIAL LIFE

  • Do you offer a billeting program or a dormitory for non-local student athletes?
    • The RHA Kelowna billet coordinator works very closely with our out-of-town players, families, billet families and RINK Kelowna staff to foster a good understanding and transition into the billet home. This transition involves a criminal record check, reference checks, home visit and inspection, player information profile and communication between the incoming family and billet family before the beginning of the year. Throughout the year our billet coordinator will do regular monthly checks with the billeted players and the billet family to insure smooth transition and ongoing success of the billeting program. Semi-annual interviews are conducted to gather information and review the effectiveness of the billet family and the billeting program. Exit interviews are done for retention of effective billet families and gathering information for effective placements and improvements for the following year.

STUDENT ATHLETE HEALTH

  • How are injuries and sick student athletes monitored?
    • If an athlete becomes sick or encounters an injury the staff and billet families work together to nurse the player back to health. In the event of illness, the billet family will look after the player until they are ready to return to regular activities. This will include doctor鈥檚 appointments, getting prescriptions and any other needs to reach recovery. The billet family keeps our billet coordinator and coaches informed of the athlete鈥檚 progress to recovery. If the illness is considered severe a doctor鈥檚 note maybe required before the athlete can return to regular training and game play.
    • When a player receives an injury, it is assessed by our athletic therapist. They will determine a back to play regimen. This may require referral to our Academy doctor who would refer a back to play timeline and protocol. Our team of doctors, athletic therapists, coaching staff and families will work together to help support the students鈥 training plan to get back to regular activity.
