10 former CSSHL student-athletes helped Canada West win gold yesterday at the 2023 World Junior A Challenge.

The tournament, which took place from December 10-17, saw some of the best junior A players from Canada, the US, Sweden and Slovakia gather in Truro, NS.

Canada East (3-1-0) would finish the round robin in second, while Canada West (1-3-0) finished fourth, with both teams advancing to the semi-finals. Canada East would defeat Sweden 7-5 while Canada West beat the US 4-3 in overtime to set up an all Canada final.

With Canada East having won the round robin matchup between the two clubs 5-2, Canada West would flip the script with a 7-2 victory to capture gold.

Jack Silverberg (Okotoks Oilers/OHA Edmonton) captained the team and netminder Erick Roest (Sherwood Park Crusaders/Northern Alberta Xtreme) was named a Tournament All-Star.

The Canada West roster included the following CSSHL alumni, all 10 of which play in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL):

The Sherwood Park Crusaders have signed five current or former Â鶹´«Ã½Èë¿Ú (CSSHL) student-athletes for the 2023/24 Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) season.

Quinn Abbott played three seasons in the CSSHL. The North Vancouver, BC defenseman joined West Van Academy for the 2018/19 U15 season, finishing with 17 points in 30 games. The following year he would tally 5 points in 24 U15 Prep games with West Van. Abbott spent the 2022/23 season with the BWC Academy U18 Prep team. In 32 games he scored 5 goals and assisted on 19 more.

A defenseman from Cobden, ON, Wyatt Davis played two seasons in the CSSHL with Notre Dame. He would play seven games for Notre Dame U15 Prep team in 2019/20, recording two assists. In 2021/22 Davis would finish fourth in team scoring while leading all Notre Dame U17 Prep defensemen with 12 goals, 23 assists and 35 points in 30 games.

Originally from St. John’s, NL, Conor Ryan headed west to Shawnigan Lake School for the 2022/23 U18 Prep season. In 32 games he would finish fifth in team scoring while leading Shawnigan defensemen with 9 goals, 19 assists and 28 points.

Selected in the seventh round, 142nd overall by the Prince George Cougars at the 2021 Western Hockey League (WHL) Draft, Garrett Thom spent two seasons in the CSSHL with OHA Edmonton, During the 2020/21 season the Edmonton, AB forward recorded three points in three U15 Prep games. The following season Thom would tally 6 goals and 11 assists in 33 U18 Prep games. He would play in four games for the Crusaders this past season, finishing with one goal.

A forward from Wimborne, AB, Drew Williamson joined the Northern Alberta Xtreme (NAX) for the 2022/23 U18 Prep season. In 33 games the seventh round, 152nd overall selection by the Brandon Wheat Kings at the 2021 WHL Draft, would record 6 goals and 16 assists.

Former CSSHL netminder Maximilian Prazma has committed to University of St. Thomas for the 2023/24 season.

Prazma joined Okanagan Hockey Academy (OHA) for the 2016/17 U15 season, posting a 4.23 GAA, .867 SV%, 1 shutout and a 9-6-0 record in 20 games. The following U16 Prep season with OHA the Calgary, AB goalie played 18 games, finishing with a 4-12-0 record, 3.73 GAA and .895 SV%.

In 2018/19 Prazma joined the Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (PCHA) U18 Prep team. In two seasons with PCHA Prazma would go 7-25-2 with 1 shutout, a 5.24 GAA and .889 SV% in 38 games.

Prazma spent the 2022/23 in the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) split between the Sherwood Park Crusaders and Calgary Canucks. In 25 AJHL games he would post a 3.36 GAA with a 11-8-4 record and 1 shutout.

Located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the University of St. Thomas is an NCAA Division I program competing in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) Conference.

Quinn Disher and Tyler Miller have committed to the Michigan Tech University Huskies for 2023/24 season.

Disher spent four seasons in the Â鶹´«Ã½Èë¿Ú (CSSHL) joining Edge School in 2016/17. In 21 U15 Prep games that season he would tally 4 points. In 2017/18 he would suit up for the Okanagan Hockey Academy (OHA) U15 Prep team, recording 34 points in 29 games. The Fort St, John, BC forward would lead the OHA U16 Prep team in scoring the following season as he finished with 47 points in 36 games. Disher would spent one more season at OHA, tallying a team high 42 points in 36 U18 Prep games.

In 2020/21 Disher would join the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL), spending two and a half seasons with the Trail Smoke Eaters and recording 67 points in 91 games. He would split the 2022/23 season between Trail, the Brooks Bandits, and the Cowichan Valley Capitals.

Miller joined the CSSHL and Northern Alberta Xtreme (NAX) in 2018/19 playing for their U16 Prep team. The Medicine Hat, AB defenseman would record 22 points in 36 games that season. He would play six games with the NAX U18 Prep team the following season, before joining the Sherwood Park Crusaders for the rest of the 2019/20 campaign. He would play 34 games for the Crusaders in 2020/21, recording 6 points. This past season Miller had 9 goals and 29 assists in 58 Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) games with the Crusaders.

Located in Houghton, Michigan, Michigan Tech University is an NCAA Division I program that competes in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) conference.

The Florida Panthers have signed former Northern Alberta Xtreme (NAX) defenseman Mike Benning to an NHL Entry Level Contract.

Benning spent the 2018/17 season in the Â鶹´«Ã½Èë¿Ú (CSSHL) with the NAX U16 Prep team. In 29 games Benning would lead all CSSHL defensemen with 49 points, capturing the CSSHL U16 Prep Top Defenseman Award. He would add three points in four playoff games, helping NAX capture the 2018 CSSHL U16 Prep Western Championships.

In 2018/19 Benning would make the jump to the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) with the Sherwood Park Crusaders. That season Benning would tally 10 goals, 51 assists and 61 points,  best amongst AJHL defensemen. That season Benning would earn AJHL (North) All-Rookie Team honours. The following season the St. Albert, AB product would top his own previous bests, leading all AJHL defensemen with 75 points in 54 games. Benning would be named to the AJHL (North) All-Star Team ad well as capture AJHL and CJHL Top Defensemen honours.

Following his successful AJHL campaign the Panthers would select Benning in the fourth round, 95th overall at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

In 2020/21 Benning joined University of Denver in the NCAA. He would finish his freshman season with 11 points. Benning’s sophomore season would see him lead Denver defensemen with 38 points in 41 games while capturing individual accolades including NCAA (NCHC) and NCAA (All-USCHO) Second All-Star Team. To top it off Benning was named to the NCAA (Championship) All-Tournament Team and the NCAA (Championship) MVP as he helped the University of Denver capture an NCAA Championship.

This past season Benning was named an NCAA (West) Second All-American Team, recording 34 points in 39 games with Denver.

Former Â鶹´«Ã½Èë¿Ú (CSSHL) student-athlete Matthew Savoie has signed a National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Level Contract (ELC) with the Buffalo Sabres.

The Sabres selected the St. Albert, AB forward with the ninth pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. Savoie became the eighth ever CSSHL alumni selected inside the Top 10.

Savoie spent three seasons in the CSSHL, joining the Northern Alberta Xtreme (NAX) U15 Prep team in 2017/18. In 30 games Savoie would finish second in league scoring with 97 points, including a league best 69 assists as he was named the CSSHL U15 Prep Most Valuable Player.

Granted ‘Exceptional Status’ to play U18 as an underage, Savoie would record 31 goals and 40 assists in 30 U18 Prep games, once again being named the divisions Most Valuable Player. He would add an additional 12 points in 5 playoff games as NAX captured a CSSHL U18 Prep League Championship.

Following the 2018/19 season the Winnipeg Ice would select Savoie first overall in the 2019 Western Hockey League (WHL) Draft. Savoie would split the 2019/20 season with the Ice and RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg U18 Prep, recording 7 assists in 22 WHL games and 52 points in 22 CSSHL U18 Prep games.

That season Savoie would suit up for Team Canada at the Youth Olympics, captaining the team to a bronze medal, while also later competing for Canada White at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge where he would tally six points in six games.

Savoie would join the Sherwood Park Crusaders for the beginning of the 2020/21 Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) season, tallying six points in four games before heading south of the border due to the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic.

2021/22 would see Savoie return to the Winnipeg Ice, where he would lead his team and all WHL rookies with 90 points in 65 games while earning WHL (East) First All-Star Team honours.

Jerome Maharaj spent three seasons in the CSSHL with Delta Hockey Academy. The Delta, BC forward joined the program in 2018/19, recording 7 points in 27 U15 Prep games. He would play 34 U16 Prep games the following season, scoring 7 goals to go along with 12 assists. This season, Maharaj lead his Delta U18 Prep team with 32 assists, and would finish tied for second in team scoring with 44 points in 36 games.

A forward from Edmonton, AB, Brock Souch has spent the past two seasons in the CSSHL with the Northern Alberta Xtreme (NAX). In four U15 Prep games in 2020/21, Souch recorded one goal and three assists. In 33 U16 Prep games this season, Souch would finish second on his team and sixth in the league with 61 points, while adding 9 points in 5 playoff games as NAX captured a U16 Prep League Championship. Souch would win silver with Team AB at the 2021 WHL Cup, scoring twice while adding one assist in five games.

The Regina Pats selected Souch in the fifth round, 107th overall in the 2021 Western Hockey League (WHL) Draft.

Carter Savoie has signed a National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Level Contract (ELC) with the Edmonton Oilers after they selected the St. Albert, AB forward in the fourth round, 100th overall at the 2020 NHL Entry Draft.

Savoie spent the 2017/18 season in the Â鶹´«Ã½Èë¿Ú (CSSHL) with the Northern Alberta Xtreme (NAX), finishing fifth in the U16 Prep division in scoring with 58 points in 34 games. Selected in the ninth round, 198th overall in the 2017 Western Hockey League (WHL) Draft by the Regina Pats, Savoie would add an additional eight points in five CSSHL playoff games, helping NAX capture the CSSHL U16 Prep Western Championship.

He would make the jump to the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) the following season with the Sherwood Park Crusaders, finishing with a team best 42 assists and 73 points in 58 games, good enough for fifth in league scoring. His impressive season would be capped with AJHL (North) All-Rookie Team, AJHL (North) All-Star Team, AJHL Rookie of the Year and Canadian Junior Hockey League (CJHL) Top Rookie honours.

Savoie would return to the Crusaders for the 2019/20 season, leading the AJHL with 53 goals in 54 games, while his 99 points were second in the AJHL to teammate Arjun Atwal. Savoie would once again be named to the AJHL (North) All-Star Team as he helped the Crusaders to an AJHL best 98 regular season points. The Oilers would select Savoie in the NHL Entry Draft at the conclusion of this season.

In 2020/21 Savoie would join the University of Denver for the NCAA season. In 24 games he would score 13 goals and 7 assists, while earning NCAA (NCHC) All-Rookie Team honours.

2021/22 would be a historic season for Savoie as he would finish with second on his team in scoring 45 points in 39 games, including a team best 23 goals, as Denver would go on to be crowned NCAA Division I Champions.

Following the conclusion of his NCAA season, Savoie would sign an Amateur Tryout-Out Agreement (ATO) with the Oilers American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors. Savoie would play two games for the Condors before signing his NHL Contract, effectively ending his 2021/22 season.

Cale Ashcroft becomes the latest Northern Alberta Xtreme (NAX) alum and Sherwood Park Crusader player to join the University of Denver.

Ashcroft will join Michael Benning and Carter Savoie at the University of Denver, who both spent one season at NAX before joining the Crusaders.

Now in his second Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) season with the Crusaders, Ashcroft has tallied 26 points in 57 AJHL games. The St. Alberta, AB defenseman was originally selected in the fourth round, 76th overall in the 2019 Western Hockey League (WHL) Draft by the Saskatoon Blades.

Prior to his time in the AJHL, Ashcroft spent three seasons at NAX, joining the program in 2017/18. He would spend the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons in the Â鶹´«Ã½Èë¿Ú (CSSHL) U15 Prep division, tallying 27 points in 60 games. In 2019/20 he would finish with 15 points in 17 U16 Prep games.

The University of Denver is an NCAA Division I school located in Denver, CO. The team competes in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC).

The Alberta Junior Hockey League’s (AJHL) Sherwood Park Crusaders have signed a trio of Canadian Sports School Hockey League (CSSHL) student-athletes for the 2021/22 season.

Among the trio include two St. Albert, AB natives Ryan Arnold and Levi Fesyk who have both spent the last two seasons with the Northern Alberta Xtreme (NAX).

A seventh-round pick, 143rd overall by the Red Deer Rebels in the 2020 Western Hockey League (WHL) Bantam Draft, Arnold recorded 30 points in 29 games during the 2019/20 season with the NAX U15 Prep team. The next season he would tally four points in three games at the U16 Prep level during a COVID-19 shortened season. Ryan will join his older brother, Evan, who just finished his rookie season in Sherwood Park.

Fesyk recorded 18 goals and 18 assists in 34 U16 Prep games during the 2019/20 season. He would make the jump to the U18 Prep division this past season, finishing with two goals and three assists in six games.

Okanagan Hockey Academy (OHA) netminder Marek Pocherewny rounds out the trio signed by the Crusaders. Originally from Calgary, AB, Pocherewny joined the OHA U18 Prep team during the 2019/20 season, returning to the team this past season. In his two years at OHA Pocherewny played 28 games finishing with a 2.76 goals against average and a .905 save percentage. Pocherewny was drafted by the Calgary Hitmen in the third-round, 47th overall, in the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft.
