Notre Dame (4/OT) vs Northern Alberta Xtreme (3) U17

Sunday’s game for the Notre Dame Hounds stood as a reminder that persistence can quite easily be the thing between a win and a loss. After 40 minutes of play, Notre Dame sat in a two-goal hole against the Northern Alberta Xtreme, with goals from Seth Kshyk and Jackson Curle leading NAX into the third up by a pair, despite Notre Dame’s 27-22 edge in shots on goal. The Hounds finally got one past Lenox Alanen early in the third, and quickly after, struck with their equalizer off the stick of Pearson Sokoloski. Later in the period, NAX managed to retake the lead through Jacob Collins, but again couldn’t hold on. Ryder Pisiak scored with 1:43 left to tie things up, and in overtime, Notre Dame found their winner, through Joe Wakabyashi’s second goal of the game.ÌýÌý

Bourget College (4) vs Okanagan Hockey Ontario East (3) U18

Following wins over King Heights Academy and Fort Erie on Friday and Saturday, Bourget College’s final task of the weekend brought them Okanagan Hockey Ontario, a team Bourget had yet to face at all this season. They’d lead at two different points in the first period, but couldn’t retain the advantage at either point, with OHO fighting back both times to send the game into the second period tied. Philippe Walsh scored OHO’s second power play goal of the game to give them a 3-2 lead in the second, only failing to extend the lead thanks to Bourget’s Maxime Lavoie in between the pipes. Bourget scored to tie things at three heading into the third, where Olivier Tétreault (1G, 2A) and Mathys Morrisette would help set up William Sasseville (2G) to score the go-ahead goal on the power play, giving Bourget College a 4-3 lead. Following the goal, Bourget’s penalty kill successfully survived three consecutive OHO power plays in the third period and would be able to see their lead over the finish line, winning 4-3.Ìý

STAR Hockey Academy (4) vs Okanagan Hockey Academy (1) U15

Save for a stretch of play lasting less than four minutes in the back half of the third period, the STAR Hockey Academy and Okanagan Hockey Academy played a razor-thin game on Sunday. Josh Rzonca (2G) gave STAR the first goal of the game, a lead that lasted until Landon Ruck scored on the powerplay to tie the game for OHA. Both goaltenders stood tall through two, but STAR’s Henry Price had a special afternoon, stopping 37 shots by the time the game was over. His strong play kept STAR tied up at one until the second half of the third, and despite OHA generating their fair share of chances, they’d fall behind. Steve Paladino would score first before Rzonca and Olan Ward grabbed goals 43 seconds apart, stretching the game out of OHA’s reach at 4-1.

Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy (1) vs Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (13) U15 Prep

Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy was outmatched in all three games they played over the weekend in the U15 Prep division, but on Sunday, they’d hit the ice with merely ten skaters, and it was clear from the outset that PCHA’s legs were going to be the difference. The shorthanded CDA couldn’t stay in the fight from the outset, and by the time the first period was over, it was clear any contest was as well. Ultimately, PCHA scored 13 goals on 60 shots in the game, with five-point performances from Cameron Young-Thompson (4G, 1A) and Luke Schamehorn (1G, 4A) leading the way. Pacific Coast’s win is an impressive bounceback after having lost big to RHA Winnipeg and RHA Kelowna in the first two games of the weekend.Ìý

St. George’s School (0) vs Yale Hockey Academy (7) U15

The first intermission of Sunday’s game between St. George’s School and Yale Hockey Academy would have seen both teams displeased in some capacity. At 2-0 Yale, you could have been mistaken into believing the first twenty minutes were evenly-contested. When you take into consideration, however, the offensive zone possession, high-danger scoring chances, and 25-5 edge in shots on goal, it was clear that wasn’t the case. St. George’s knew that they’d need to focus on using the second period to even the score and increase their offensive output to get back into the game, but the goals needed for St. George to get back into the game led them to a much less tight defensive zone and gave Yale more chances off the rush. After two, Yale led 7-0, and wouldn’t need anything more to see out the victory. Lucca Tassone made a 21-save shutout, and aided by three-point games from Connor Baines (3G), Mykah Cormier (2G, 1A), and Mason Cumiskey (3A), earned the victory.

Prairie Hockey Academy (3) vs OHA Edmonton (2) U17

Given OHA Edmonton’s prowess throughout the U17 division of the CSSHL so far this season, they’d have been the favourites against their Prairie Hockey Academy opponents. PHA, however, are themselves going into Sunday having defeated Northern Alberta Xtreme twice by a combined 12-0 scoreline in their two previous games over the weekend. OHA Edmonton outshot PHA in the first period, generating the bulk of the chances, but couldn’t score on Colton Lutz. A scoreless first period preceded a second that saw goals scored at a frenetic pace, with both OHA Edmonton and PHA holding and relinquishing leads, with the 1-0 OHA Edmonton lead flipping into PHA’s favour within five minutes at the start of the period. After Hudson Blair’s second of the game tied things up for OHA Edmonton, it looked like the third period was destined to start tied, before PHA struck again, this time through Braden Thompson. Thompson’s goal gave PHA the lead with 2:33 to go in the second, a lead PHA and Lutz were able to hold throughout the third period for a 3-2 win over the second-placed team in the U17 division to this point in the season.

CIH Academy (1) vs Fort Erie International Academy (4) East U18

Memories of Fort Erie International Academy winning every one of their five league games in January have, unfortunately, been replaced by the three consecutive losses suffered by Fort Erie since the calendar’s pages flipped. CIH Academy and FEIA’s five-on-five play was razor-thin for the vast majority of the game, with Mateo Moro scoring in the first for Fort Erie and Justin Savage responding in the second for CIH. The difference in Sunday’s game, though, boils down to discipline; Fort Erie gave their opponents four power play opportunities during the game, while CIH gave Fort Erie 14 chances to score on the power play. It took until the second period for Fort Erie to break through on the man advantage, but after Brett Krtanjek made it 2-1 on the power play, Riley Cave was able to extend the lead further. Baron Tanton eventually sealed the deal into the empty net, bumping the slump for Fort Erie with a 4-1 lead.Ìý

Okanagan Hockey Academy (3) vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (4) U18 Prep

Sunday’s battle between Okanagan Hockey Academy and RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna was ostensibly the tale of two contests; a first period completely controlled by OHA and an evenly-matched second and third that made for one of the most exciting matchups of the weekend. RHA Kelowna’s Conner Nicolson did well in the first period to stem the tide, making 12 stops on 13 first-period shots. After Marcus Sadovia for RHA Kelowna and Charlie Grant for OHA had traded first-period goals, Ethan Patterson scored to give OHA their first lead in the second period. That came prior to a 1:24 span that swung the game’s momentum in completely the opposite direction. Riley Pederson’s tying goal for RHA Kelowna was the first domino to fall, and after Soren Brons-Douville (1A) took a slashing penalty, RHA Kelowna’s powerplay did the rest. Brady Walker (1G, 2A) scored the go-ahead goal short thereafter to give his team the lead through two periods, and early in the third, RHA Kelowna took the game’s first two-goal lead. Maddox Gandha’s fifth goal in his last five games made it 4-2, and while Cohen Handby was able to make it a one-goal game, that’s as close as OHA would come.Ìý

RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (2) vs OHA Edmonton (6) U15 Prep

OHA Edmonton’s U15 Prep team has made the case throughout the season that the star power on their roster is amongst the best in the league. While the bulk of the attention this season has been on others, OHA Edmonton’s Steven Leavitt (4G, 2A) has been making his case as one of the team’s most promising prospects, starting February with three goals and five points in three games. That was before he failed to register a point in two previous games this weekend, with his OHA Edmonton squad beating St. George’s School in a shootout before defeating Delta Hockey Academy in overtime. It was obvious early how determined Leavitt was to bump the two-game slump, as 34 seconds into the first period, he scored the opening goal to put his team in front. RHA Kelowna wasn’t discouraged by the early goal, eventually earning a powerplay opportunity late in the first. That, however, turned out to be a blessing in disguise, with Leavitt stealing the puck in his own zone and taking it all the way down the ice to score his second of the game shorthanded. It took Leavitt less than five minutes of the second period to finish his hat trick, before he earned an assist on the 4-0 goal, scored by Micah Montgomery (1G, 2A). The four-goal deficit through two periods was ultimately beyond what RHA Kelowna could make up, but not for a lack of trying, as Jack Leslie and Cole Dobson scored to pull them within two. They wouldn’t get closer than that, and Leavitt would earn a goal and assist to cap off his six-point game and OHA Edmonton’s 6-2 win.

Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (1) vs BWC Academy (8) U15

Two power play goals from Ethan Kartadinata (1G, 1A) and Eric Prexler (1G, 1A) in the first half of the first period set BWC Academy on their way in their Sunday afternoon battle with PCHA. Kaz Westcott’s five-minute major for checking from behind gave BWC Academy an elongated power play, which is where Prexler’s goal preceded one from Ryker Carson (2G, 2A), helping BWC Academy to a 3-0 lead and control of the game that wouldn’t cease. After three periods, Burnaby Winter Club won the game 8-1, thanks to Carter Yule adding three assists to Carson’s four points.Ìý

Shawnigan Lake School (2) vs Notre Dame (5) U15 Prep

The Notre Dame Hounds U15 Prep squad had dropped twelve consecutive games prior to yesterday when Mika Richard’s third-period game-winning goal took the Hounds over OHA by a 2-1 scoreline. Notre Dame wouldn’t skip a beat when they hit the ice Sunday against Shawnigan Lake School, and despite Shawnigan giving Ben Meyer some sweats in net for the Hounds, Notre Dame would eventually jump out to a 3-0 first-period lead thanks to goals from Matthew Boekelder, Liam Bird, and Coltin Barrington. Shawnigan turned up the pressure from there and was able to get back in the game, thanks to goals from Chase Murgatroyd at the end of the first and Asher Devries in the second. Notre Dame led 3-2 for nearly half the game, with Shawnigan consistently foiled by Meyer whenever they’d seriously threaten for the equalizer. Eventually, Notre Dame extended their lead, with third-period goals from Duke Lesnar and Lukas Lundgren leading the Hounds to a 5-2 win.Ìý

Prairie Hockey Academy (4) vs Calgary International Hockey Academy (6) U18 Prep

Hockey commentary of any kind very often features or surrounds some sort of cliché. More often than not, it’s because they’re true, and Calgary International Hockey Academy demonstrated the importance of one on numerous occasions today; the shifts after a goal are the most important. Scoring quickly after you’ve already scored or quickly after an opponent’s goal is one of the most consistently reliable ways to change the momentum of a hockey game, and the timeliness of CIHA’s goal-scoring today demonstrated as such. Grant Gilege scored the first goal of the game in the first period, giving Prairie Hockey Academy a 1-0 lead. That was PHA’s only lead of the game, and thanks to a Lincoln Martin (2G), it lasted merely 18 seconds. CIHA didn’t stop at merely stamping out the deficit, with Hunter Kelso scoring just 32 seconds after Martin to give his team a 2-1 lead. Carter Wingert scored for PHA on the powerplay early in the second period, pulling PHA back into a tie, where the game would last until just past its halfway mark. That’s when CIHA would, again, manage to score two quick-fire goals. Jack Coghlan (1G, 1A) and Townes Kozicky (2G) scored second-period goals merely 1:41 apart, extending CIHA’s lead to 4-2, which they’d take into the third. Martin scored again, and although PHA pushed back themselves, Kozicky’s second goal of the game into the empty net sealed CIHA’s 6-4 win.Ìý

Yale Hockey Academy (1) vs Edge School (4) U15 Prep

Edge School’s U15 Prep squad started the weekend off with two somewhat contrasting games, specifically from a defensive perspective. Friday’s shootout with BWC Academy saw a combined sixteen goals hit the back of the net in regulation, and even though Edge School managed to score eight of their own, they’d lose in a shootout. It stands to reason why, after scoring eight goals and failing to win, the focus for Edge would be on defense for the rest of the weekend. Saturday’s win over STAR Hockey Academy demonstrated such, with Kaidyn Thomas’ 22 saves not just enough for the win, but also the shutout as Edge won 6-0. Sunday’s game brought them Yale Hockey Academy, and once more, it was an extremely impressive display of play control and shot suppression. Edge scored three in the first through Grayson Bauer, Drew Wilkinson, and Max Ranseth, but more importantly, locked the defensive zone down enough to limit Yale to two shots in the first, six in the second, and four in the third. Edge put things into cruise control as they entered the second half of the game up by three, and later, George Matheos scored to make it 4-0 Edge. Parker McMillan pulled Yale one back, but that’s all his club could muster, with Edge School now bouncing back from their 9-8 loss on Friday to defeat STAR Hockey Academy and Yale Hockey Academy in two games by a combined score of 10-1.
