Tyson Giuriato, Director of Media and Communications for the Â鶹´«Ã½Èë¿Ú (CSSHL), passed away in August 2020. Tyson joined the league in 2013. His knowledge of the game, willingness to engage with student-athletes, and ability to track alumni success both on and off the ice were undeniable and made him a key component of the league.
Away from work, Tyson enjoyed his boxer dogs, road trips exploring new areas, BBQ cook-offs, fishing, spending time on Denman Island, reading and cheering for his favourite football team, the Seattle Seahawks – having been on the season ticket waiting list for years. Tyson loved sports, but his true passion was for the game of hockey. He was a lifelong fan of the Vancouver Canucks.
As a child playing rep hockey on Vancouver Island, Tyson would spend time each week tracking player stats in all the local rep leagues, monitoring every player’s achievements. His parents still have these collected stats – a reminder of his passion for the game. Tyson also enjoyed the many hockey camps he attended as a child, which helped shape him as both a player and a person. At the age of 15, he left home to join the Banff Hockey Academy, where he made life-long friends from all over the world while playing the game he loved.
After school, Tyson pursued a successful career in hockey journalism, where he wrote articles for both Hockey Canada and his beloved Vancouver Canucks. During Tyson’s time with the CSSHL, he played a pivotal role in growing the league from 22 teams in British Columbia and Alberta, to 84 teams spread all across Canada. He managed all of the leagues’ press releases, stories, and social media presence which he grew from launch to include Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube accounts with over 25,000 followers.
To honour Tyson’s passion and contributions to the game of hockey, his family and the CSSHL community would like to offer families the ability to have their child attend a summer hockey camp of their choice across Canada (does not need to be affiliated with a CSSHL program). The Tyson Giuriato Hockey Camp Scholarship will make this possible by paying for one hockey camp registration for the successful applicants.
