OHA Edmonton (5/OT) vs Northern Alberta Xtreme (4) U15 Western Championships
The CSSHL’s Western Championships will feature 104 teams playing just shy of 200 games between March 2nd and March 16th in Penticton, and on day one, OHA Edmonton U15 and Northern Alberta Xtreme U15 played what could easily be one of the most exciting games of the whole competition. Knox Kehler opened NAX’s account on an early powerplay, and while OHA Edmonton fought back with an equalizer, NAX notched a late first-period goal from Carter Knogler. Lincoln Baschuk made it 3-1 early in the second period, giving NAX a two-goal edge merely 83 seconds into the second period. From there, though, the game would change; OHA Edmonton dominated the rest of the second period, and Eli Swift managed to pull his team back within one. After a second period that saw OHA Edmonton double NAX’s shot total, they’d keep their pressure and control of the game up into the third period. Liam MacMillan and Braydon Lynam scored two goals in less than three minutes, giving OHA Edmonton a lead, which they’d hold until the late stages of the third period. Merely three seconds from defeat, NAX managed to level the score and force overtime, with Malaki Andrews (2A) springing Keatyn Devlin for a last-gasp equalizer. Both teams had their chances in overtime, but eventually, Marek Pashko won it, taking the puck wide to the outside of the offensive zone before driving around the net and finishing the game off with a wrap-around tuck, winning it 5-4 for OHA Edmonton.Ìý

Indigenous Sports Academy (4) vs Notre Dame (2) U18 Prep
The Indigenous Sports Academy and Notre Dame Hounds traded periods of control in their Sunday afternoon battle, with ISA outplaying their opponents in the first period and Notre Dame being the better team in the second. RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (5) vs RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (4) U15 Division II Western Championships
RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna and RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg’s Sunday afternoon battle featured three periods that all could have been their own hockey games: the first belonging to RHA Kelowna, the second a scoreless tie, and the third controlled by RHA Winnipeg. An eight-minute span of play in the first period saw RHA Kelowna jump out to a 3-0 lead, with Luke Turner (1G, 1A) and Austin Schultz (2A) notching two points apiece on the three first-period goals. Kelson Hawreluik (2G) pulled one back for RHA Winnipeg late in the first, setting up a second period in which the goaltenders stole the show, combining to save each of the 28 shots in the middle frame. Merely 62 seconds into the third period, RHA Kelowna would take a three-goal lead, thanks to Cooper deWal. Austin Schultz made it 5-1 RHA Kelowna before the midway point, and with eight minutes left in the third, RHA Winnipeg faced down a four-goal deficit. They’d keep up enough pressure that would eventually result in RHA Winnipeg directing 25 shots on goal in the third period alone. Down 5-1, they’d chip away at the disadvantage, as Kelson Hawreluik scored his second and Beck Van Kemenade scored twice late in the third period. That would pull RHA Winnipeg within one, but that’s as close as they’d get, falling 5-4.Ìý
BWC Academy (5) vs Yale Hockey Academy (3) U15 Western Championships
Scoring the first goal of any given period means you’re starting on the front foot. For the most part, Yale Hockey Academy and Burnaby Winter Club Academy played themselves a very even game in their Western Championships opener Sunday afternoon. The difference, really, was the timeliness of Burnaby Winter Club’s goals, with BWC scoring first in every period.. Ethan Kartadinata (2G) scored in the first to give BWC the lead, and while Yale tied things up, Nathan DaSilva extended BWC’s lead to 2-1 merely 29 seconds after the equalizing goal hit the back of the net. It took Kartadinata less than three minutes of the second period to score, giving BWC a 3-1 lead, and while Yale made it 3-2 prior to the second intermission, BWC put the game beyond them early in the third. Michael Puddicombe scored 27 seconds into the third, making it 4-2, with Carter Tyle eventually finishing off the victory with a fifth goal. BWC won 5-3, with Tyson Oake making 31 stops en route to the victory.Ìý

Pilot Mound Hockey Academy (2) vs North Shore Warriors (4) U17 Prep Division II Western Championships

Casey Silverman tied the game for Pilot Mound, but two second-period goals from Tobin Schaefer and Connor Liu gave North Shore a 3-1 lead through two periods. Adam Zamecnik dragged Pilot Mound back within one early in the third, but Lekakis’ second of the game extended North Shore’s lead to 4-2. The Warriors outshot PMHA in each period, killing each of their four penalties, scoring once shorthanded, and going 50% on the powerplay for a complete 4-2 victory.
Shawnigan Lake School (4) vs Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy (2) U17 Prep Division II Western Championships
Sunday being Coeur d’Alene Hockey Academy’s day was dependent on Sunday being Akira Ota’s day. 14 goals and 25 points in 36 regular season games were enough for Ota to lead CDA in both goals and points, but he’d struggled in the lead-up to the Western Championships. Heading into CDA’s last regular season game, Ota hadn’t scored in seven games, scoring merely one assist in those seven. In his last game, Ota scored two goals and an assist. He’d pick up right where he left off on Sunday against Shawnigan Lake School, scoring a powerplay goal 8:24 into the first period. CDA’s lead was temporary, with a goal from McAllister Mugford (2G) sending the game into the second period tied at one. CDA reestablished their lead early in the second period, with Ota scoring again. Shawnigan pushed back hard and, in the second half of the second period, received a lifeline in the form of three consecutive CDA penalties. Matthew Morris scored on a five-on-three to tie the game up at one before McAllister Mugford scored his second of the game, again on a powerplay, to make it 3-2 Shawnigan. Case Bentley scored the only goal of the third period, notching the insurance marker just past the halfway point, and Shawnigan Lake took the contest 4-2.
