GAME DAY RECAP: March 9, 2025

Bishop’s College School (6) vs Fort Erie International Academy (4) East U17

Thomas Harvey opened the scoring for Fort Erie 3:45 into the game. Jan Vladar (2G) levelled the score 10 minutes later with his 16th goal of the season. Jaydem Goolab (2G) restored the Fort Erie lead midway through the second while on the power play, but Vladar once again tied the game 30 seconds later. Bishop’s would start the third firing on all cylinders as Brandon Fuicelli scored 46 seconds in before Mavrick Legault (2G) scored 1:01 later and another 34 seconds after that. Fort Erie wouldn’t go away quietly as Goolab and Channing Cooper scored 39 seconds apart midway through the period to bring their team within one with 8:19 left to play. But Samuel Boutet (1G, 2A) would score an empty net goal with 15 seconds remaining to secure the Bishop’s victory. Dax Doiron (27/31) and Demitry Gikas (30/35) were in net for their respective teams.Ìý

RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (1) vs Okanagan Hockey Academy (5) Female U18 Prep Western Championships

The competitiveness of Sunday’s game for RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg was in the hands of Maggie Schell, with RHA Winnipeg’s goaltender mustering a brilliant performance through the game’s first twenty minutes. Okanagan Hockey Academy outshot their opponents 17-4 in the first period, and Schell nearly dragged RHA Winnipeg out of the period tied before Mena Bhatt (1G, 2A) scored with 100 seconds to play to give OHA the lead. The second period, unfortunately for RHA Winnipeg, saw the dam break; Emma Deleurme, Tiani Makokis, and Alex Recsky all scored for OHA in the second period alone, and the 4-0 scoreline through forty minutes was as good as game over. Okanagan Hockey Academy eventually secured a 5-1 victory.Ìý

St. George’s School vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna U15 Prep Western Championships Consolation

The first forty and final twenty minutes of Sunday’s game between St. George’s School and RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna were somewhat significant contrasts; St. George’s Noah Fowler (3G) scored the only goal in a first period that saw St. George’s outshoot their opponents 11-8. Fowler scored again in the second, but the two-goal St. George’s advantage was short-lived, thanks to Deacon Gayfer’s response a mere 23 seconds after Fowler’s second goal. Bronson Lamontagne (1G, 1A) drew RHA Kelowna back to level, and while Noah Fowler completed his hat-trick to make it 3-2 St. George’s, Channon Fummerton tied the game heading into the third. That’s where the script flipped; the 3-3 tie and 23-19 shots in goal edge for St. George’s through forty was amended quickly and frequently; St. George’s peppered the RHA Kelowna goal for 17 shots in the third, and managed five goals. Bradley Ching scored the go-ahead goal with 52 seconds, and Logan Okamura’s two goals later in the third period helped St. George’s to an emphatic 8-3 win.

South Alberta Hockey Academy vs Shawnigan Lake School Female U18 Prep Western ChampionshipsÌý

Shawnigan Lake School’s first period against the South Alberta Hockey Academy was one they’d be incredibly keen to improve upon; Dawson Benson scored early, but Kapri Coston’s equalizer sent the game into the second period tied at one goal apiece. Shawnigan has been one of the more dominant CSSHL Female U18 Prep programs so far this season, while SAHA have been doing their best to stay above the middle of the 15-team standings. It took a little bit longer than expected, but eventually, Shawnigan took over the game, with Hannah Palumbo in the SAHA goal needing some heroics to keep the game tied. With under forty seconds to play, Grace Cooper’s power play goal gave Shawnigan a 2-1 lead, making good on the favourites’ 19-4 edge in second-period shots on goal. Shawnigan Lake controlled the bulk of the third, and Eden Hamel iced things into the empty net, helping her team to a 3-1 lead during a game in which they more than doubled their opponents in shots on goal.Ìý

Okanagan Hockey Academy Black (5) vs North Shore Warriors (1) Female U18 Prep Division II Western Championships

Okanagan Hockey Academy Black had their top-end personnel come to play on Sunday morning, with Hayden Wild (2G, 1A), Lylah Dietz (1G, 1A), Raina Chala (2A), and Megan Norrie (2A) all popping up with multi-point efforts en route to their victory over North Shore Warriors. Dietz had her first-period goal stand on its own until Elise Miller pulled North Shore back to 1-1, where the game would remain deep into the second period. That’s where Hayden Wild took over, scoring twice in less than two minutes to stretch Okanagan Hockey Academy’s lead to two goals. Morgan Ghag’s third-period goal extended the lead, providing OHA enough of a cushion to see out what ended up being a 4-2 victory, thanks in part to Ryann Faulkner’s 29 stops to help her team over the finish line.

Shawnigan Lake School vs North Shore Warriors U15 Prep Division II Western Championships Quarter-Final

Elias Mitrikas’ season in between the pipes for the North Shore Warriors U15 Prep side has been, unfortunately, marred by a trend; Mitrikas is superb, making countless ten-bell saves, but North Shore can’t beat their opponents; Mitrikas finished the year with a staggering .926 save percentage in 20 appearances, had seven games with 50 or more saves, but only earned three victories. Sunday brought North Shore a difficult opponent in the form of Shawnigan Lake School in a big game, with a spot in the U15 Prep Division II Western Championship Semi-Finals on the line. Shawnigan controlled the bulk of the game; they successfully outshot North Shore 38-24 through three periods, had more power play opportunities, and more scoring chances. However, at every turn, Elias Mitrikas was there with a save. The game remained locked in a scoreless tie through 57 minutes, but with less than three to play, a broken play from the corner of the offensive zone found Sean Murphy in the high slot. Murphy picked the top corner, finally breaking the ice and establishing a lead that Mitrikas and the rest of the Warriors would protect until the end. Riley Taylor’s empty-netter sealed the deal, and North Shore prevailed 2-0, with Mitrikas’ 38 save shutout paving their path to the semis.

Edge School (0) vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (8) Female U18 Prep Western Championships

RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna’s Female U18 Prep team played a grand total of 30 games in the CSSHL this season. 29 of them ended in victory, with RHAK rolling through nearly every opponent who squared off against them this season. The Western Championships for RHAK started no different, as after their dismantling of RHA Winnipeg in game one, they’d roll through Edge School with relative ease on Sunday. Anezka Cabelova (2G, 1A) and Jilliam McLaughlin (2G, 1A) led the way, but the RHA Kelowna’s control was most evident by their shots on goal, outshooting Edge School by double digits in each period. RHA Kelowna ended up with eight, prevailing for the second consecutive game, and now having scored a whopping 24 goals in two games thus far at the Western Championship.

CIH Academy (3) vs Ontario Hockey Academy (5) East U17

The nature of Ontario Hockey Academy and CIH Academy’s game on Sunday would have been no surprise to anyone who watched their most head-to-head battle in the CSSHL, as on that day, a tightly-fought affair went all the way to the wire. Ontario Hockey Academy won in a shootout on that day, improving to 2-0 against CIH on the season so far. Sunday was yet another tightly-fought battle in which the winner was in doubt until the very end. To start the game off, it looked like OHA had the game in their control, with Nichita Viscu (1G, 1A) scoring to make it 2-0 late in the first period. After they doubled their lead, though, they switched off and allowed CIH back into the game. Two points apiece from Connor Welsh (1G, 1A) and Tobias Lednicky (3A) sent the game into the second period squared up at two, where it would remain for only 73 seconds of the second. Yota Matsumura quickly popped up with a goal and a primary assist for OHA, giving them a 4-2 second-period cushion. Drake Bosum pulled CIH back within one, which set the stage for the visitors to pepper the OHA goal throughout the third, but they couldn’t find a way past OHA’s Griffin Fitzpatrick, who stopped 42 of 45 shots to help his team to an eventual 5-3 victory.

OHA Edmonton vs Delta Hockey Academy Green Female U18 Prep Western Championships

Sometimes, you can only guess what happens during a hockey game that swings the momentum from one team to the other and can only guess how the coaches and players react to everything that happens throughout. The big point in which momentum seemed to swing in Sunday’s game between OHA Edmonton and Delta Hockey Academy Green was evident; after twenty minutes in which Delta Green looked flat and uninspired, the first intermission proved to be where everything changed. OHA Edmonton led 2-1 through one, outshooting Delta 9-7, and looked the more dominant side throughout the opening twenty minutes. That narrative got flipped on his head; whatever team talk was delivered in the Delta Green dressing room in between the first and second periods was massively effective in motivating Delta Green to an excellent period of hockey; they outscored OHA Edmonton 5-1 throughout the middle twenty minutes, outshot them 22-9, and controlled the pace of play throughout. Molly Cole’s two goals led the way for Delta Black through two periods, and while Joryn Hempel (1G, 1A) was able to pull OHA Edmonton a step closer in the third, Delta Black hung on for the 6-4 victory, thanks in part to goaltender Maisie Cope’s 31 stops.Ìý

Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (1) vs Notre Dame Hounds (2) U15 Prep Division II Western Championships Quarter-Final

Only one of Pacific Coast Hockey Academy and the Notre Dame Hounds could earn a semi-final spot in their Western Championship battle on Sunday, and after a first period saw both teams fail to light the lamp, the Hounds took a massive step towards the semis within just nine second-period seconds. Matthew Boekelder’s perfect wrist shot gave Notre Dame the lead, but despite the goal coming right at the beginning of the period, the rest of the second would be similarly dormant to the first from a goal-scoring perspective. It took all the way until the dying moments of the second period, when Notre Dame finally popped up with the game’s second goal, thanks to Davian Ferland. PCHA couldn’t beat Notre Dame’s Ben Meyer for nearly the entirety of the third period, and while Nehemiah Punkett would eventually get a puck behind him late in the third, it was too little, too late. Meyer’s shutout would be spoiled, but his 27 saves were still enough for the 2-1 victory.

Pilot Mound Hockey Academy (6) vs Balmoral Hall School (8) Female U18 Prep Division II Western Championships

The first and third periods for Pilot Mound Hockey Academy on Sunday were both very strong performances; they outshot their opponents in both, had plenty of chances, and scored more than their opponents in the first and last periods combined. The second period, though, was where Balmoral Hall School would do the vast majority of their damage; they managed five second-period goals, with two goals and three points from Shayna Bannister (3G, 2A) in the second period alone leading the way to Balmoral’s victory. Balmoral Hall ultimately won 8-6, thanks in part to Bannister adding another goal and assist in the third period, with the University of Manitoba commit scoring five points to lead the way to victory.

Delta Hockey Academy Black (5) vs St. Mary’s Academy (6/OT) Female U18 Prep Division II Western Championships

Delta Hockey Academy Black came into Sunday’s matchup with St. Mary’s Academy on a high note, having defeated Northern Alberta Xtreme in convincing fashion on Friday. St. Mary’s, likewise, triumphed over NAX, but in significantly less dominant fashion; that to say, the momentum lay squarely with a Delta team coming off an extra day off. It was Delta Black who took the lead through Alexis Howitt (3G) in the first period. St. Mary’s response was swift and clinical, however, with the Flames scoring twice in the five minutes that followed Howitt’s icebreaker. It would, however, be Howitt again to square things up just seven seconds to the break, striking on a Delta Black powerplay that went three-for-three in their opener against NAX. The two teams swapped punches throughout the second period, but neither side managed to take more than a one-goal lead before their opponent managed to tie it. Howitt completed her hat-trick with 50 seconds remaining in the second, giving Delta Black a 5-4 lead into the third, one they’d have a golden opportunity to build on late in the third period. A slashing penalty to St. Mary’s with just over five to play gave the red-hot Delta Black powerplay an opportunity to seal it. They failed, and less than a minute after the penalty expired, Reese Kartusch (2G, 1A) tied the game. Less than four minutes into overtime, St. Mary’s completed the comeback, thanks to Jade Pelland’s (2G) game winner.Ìý

OHA Edmonton (4) vs STAR Hockey Academy (7) U15 Prep Western Championships Quarter-Final

Two incredibly evenly-matched squads had a spirited eleven-goal thriller in their quarter-final on Sunday, with Zakhar Kovalenko (2G, 1A), Sean McIntyre (1G, 3A), and Daniel Makovetskiy (1G, 2A) leading STAR Hockey Academy to their 7-4 victory. For every one goal OHA Edmonton mustered, STAR responded with two; this happened after three consecutive OHA Edmonton goals, and by the third period, it had given STAR a three-goal stranglehold they wouldn’t relinquish. Erik Sims picked up the win for STAR, with the Tacoma, Washington native earning his second victory of the Western Championships, having made 38 saves in his first game, a win over St. George’s.

Edge School (1) vs Northern Alberta Xtreme (5) U15 Prep Western Championships Quarter-Final

Northern Alberta Xtreme’s quarter-final win over Edge School in the U15 Prep Western Championships on Sunday could have very, very easily turned out incredibly different than the 5-1 scoreline would suggest. Edge School created plenty of chances in the first period, outshooting NAX 13-8, but couldn’t get the puck behind Dawson Sheehan in the Northern Alberta Xtreme net. Sheehan stopped all 13 shots he faced and was helped by his offence, with Easton Arndt and Riley Brown (2G) each scoring in the first to give NAX a two-goal lead. From there, Northern Alberta Xtreme wrestled control of the game away from Edge, outshooting them 10-3 and 15-6 in the second and third periods, respectively. Edge would score in the second to make a game of things, but three consecutive NAX goals in the third put the nail in the coffin of Edge School’s 5-1 defeat.Ìý

Yale Hockey Academy (5/OT) vs BWC Academy (4) U15 Prep Western Championships Quarter-Final

Kristian Lima got the ball rolling for BWC Academy 59-seconds into play, leaning into a slapper after pouncing on a loose puck between the hash marks. Yale’s Tanner Massey (2G, 1A) would quickly respond for Yale, erasing BWC Academy’s lead a mere 74-seconds later. Kenzo Gibson would close the scoring in the first, jamming home a puck in close to restore BWC Academy’s advantage. Yale would find some jump early in the second as Matteo Zenone and Tony Cabelka (1G, 2A) scored 31-seconds apart to give Yale their first lead of the game. On the opposite end of the ice, BWC Academy was stirring up their batch of quick goals too as Logan Henry and Cohen Baker (1G, 1A) snatched a late pair of goals to put BWC Academy back in the driver seat. Yale would see their fair share of opportunities in the third but couldn’t manage to break past Bentley Edgar (30/35). With the goaltender pulled, Massey would roof a backhand in tight to tie things up at four, sending this quarter-final to overtime. However, Massey would take a four-minute minor to end the frame, putting his team on the penalty kill for the start of OT. After a nail-biting four-minutes, Gavin Craig (36/40) and the Yale penalty killers would fend off the penalty. The momentum would quickly swing into Yale’s favour leading to Christopher Kokkoris (1G, 1A) taking a couple stabs at net. Kokkoris would manage to maintain the puck after making a move to the goal, turning back around and attacking with speed to the middle before slipping a backhander past Edgar, sending Yale to the semi-finals in heroic fashion.

RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (3) vs Delta Hockey Academy (7) U15 Prep Western Championships Quarter-Final

Delta had RHA Winnipeg’s number in the first period, scoring three unanswered to open the scoring in their quarter-final matchup. Peter Banicevic (1G, 2A) would wire home his third of the postseason to cap off their scoring in the first. However, Brady Filmon would blast home a feed from Athens Shingoose (1G, 1A) near the end of the first, looking to generate some momentum in the second for RHA Winnipeg. Delta would keep applying pressure early in the second as Tripp Fischer (3G) found the back of the net just 65-seconds into play off a brilliant feed from Nicolas Peach (2A). Casey Pearson (1G, 1A) would score the only other goal in the period, increasing Delta’s lead to 5-1. Markus Knaub would score off a dashing solo effort to ignite the third, but Delta’s Fischer would pot two quick ones to keep RHA Winnipeg at bay and secure his hat-trick. Shingoose would score a late consolation goal to cap off an electric postseason for the Waywayseecapo, MB native. Delta moves on to the semi-finals and will play Yale at 1:15PM PST at the SOEC.
