LOCATION AND YEAR THE PROGRAM ENTERED THE CSSHL
- STAR Hockey Academy is located in Kent, WA just 20 minutes south of Seattle. Our facility is a 10-minute drive from Sea-Tac Airport making it convenient for out-of-state families to fly in and catch a game. STAR entered the league in 2023-2024 and placed 4th out of 13 teams in our U15 inaugural season.
EDUCATION
- Partner school
- Grades 9-12: Kennedy Catholic High School
- Grades: 7-8: St. Bernadette Parish School
- What are some of the things your program does to provide educational support?
- STAR works closely with both Kennedy Catholic and St. Bernadette鈥檚 to build a schedule that is both academically and athletically rigorous for our student athletes. Our hockey schedule is built to minimize days away from school with a goal of no more than 9 days of school missed per season. We also provide weekly study halls both at our training facility and when traveling on the road. Kennedy has a strong student mentor program, excellent tutoring resources and early morning class assistance for students looking for extra 1:1 time with teachers. As a Niche 鈥淎鈥 rated academic private school, Kennedy also offers an exceptional Student to Teacher ratio of 8:1 allowing each student a high level of daily interaction and monitoring by their teachers.
- How are grades monitored and how often?
- Our student athlete grades are monitored weekly. Both Kennedy Catholic and St. Bernadette communicate directly with our Hockey Director (Tanner Glass) and highlight any concerns that need to be addressed. All Coaches consider academic excellence a key component to our players development.
- How are courses and the graduation path for student athletes chosen?
- Kennedy Catholic structures its academic curriculum to prepare all student athletes to apply and be competitive candidates for post-secondary education. They offer a robust Honors, Advanced Placement (AP) and Dual Credit coursework. They also offer more than 60 athletic teams and clubs allowing for students to thrive both in and out of the classroom. As proof of our shared academic goals, the Kennedy graduating class of 2023 had a 100% college acceptance rate. Finally, as a US Private School we are closely connected to all NCAA requirements for our athletes who choose the USA college hockey path.
- Do you have an academic probation policy?
- Our academic expectations are that students maintain or exceed a 3.0 GPA. Any player that falls below a 3.0 will be placed on educational support in order to bring them back into good standing. We recognize the opportunities for our players both in and out of hockey are greatly enhanced with strong academic results.
RESIDENTIAL LIFE
- Do you offer a billeting program or a dormitory for non-local student athletes?
- Kennedy Catholic (STAR鈥檚 high school partner) offers both Dormitory and 麻豆传媒入口stay programs for STAR student athletes. Dorms are just steps away from the school and include a fitness room, game room, study area and staffed kitchen. 麻豆传媒入口stay is a more traditional 鈥渂illeting鈥 solution for our players that allows for carefully screened families to host our student athletes. Host families are required to maintain regular communication with the school to ensure a safe and happy homestay experience for all students.
STUDENT ATHLETE HEALTH
- How are injuries and sick student athletes monitored?
- We employ Certified Athletic Trainers during all CSSHL games to monitor the health and safety of all players. We also require all off-ice training professionals to be fully certified in athletic training and CPR. We also have a mental health professional (Dr. D鈥橝nthony Smith) who works with our athletes each month on various mental health and sports psychology topics. Our coaches follow all USA Hockey concussion protocols. And, we keep parents informed at all stages of injury with frequent updates on any change of injury status.
SCHEDULE
- What does the daily schedule look like for a student athlete in your program?
- At the U15 / U15 prep level, student athletes attend school from 8:30am to 12:30pm. Players then take a shuttle from school to the rink and eat lunch together. Then one team will hit the ice from 1:30pm – 2:45pm while the second team hits the gym. Teams then switch (on-ice / gym) and continue training from 3pm – 4:15pm. A minimum of once a week we replace a gym session with a group video session. There are also individual video sessions throughout the week that players and coaches work through together. A typical day wraps up between 4:30 – 5pm. In addition, twice a week, all STAR teams have dedicated 3v3 Freeplay ice at our small-ice private training facility in Issaquah (30-minutes from the rink). These typically run from 5-7pm and are highly attended, offer exceptional development and support team bonding opportunities.
- At the U17 prep level, student athletes begin their day on the ice from 7:45am – 9am Monday – Friday. Then they are shuttled to the school to begin classes at 9:30am. They attend core courses throughout the rest of the day with one afternoon period dedicated to 鈥渙ff-ice鈥 development at the Kennedy gym, track and / or training facility. The U17 prep day ends between 2:30pm – 3pm allowing players to join other high school sports teams or clubs, grab a bus or be picked up for home. As with the U15 teams, the U17 prep team also has two dedicated 3v3 Freeplay sessions that typically run between 5-7pm M-F or on open weekends.
- How many games can your teams expect to play?
- All STAR teams will play between 40-50 games per season. These include all CSSHL regular season games and Championships, exhibition games and potential USA Hockey Tier 1 State, District and National Championship games.
- What does the on and off ice training look like?
- On-Ice Highlights:
