Shawnigan Lake School today announced that Jeff Compton has been named the Head Coach of their Midget Varsity team, while David Chant will return as an Assistant Coach.

“Jeff has done a tremendous job in his many roles here at Shawnigan Lake School, 鈥渟aid Kevin Cooper, Director of Hockey. 鈥淗is work on attracting great young people to the school, to supporting the growth of the hockey program, he is a valued member of our team and a great mentor to our students. Jeff is looking forward to taking the lead role with the Varsity team and continuing to develop our athletes. He is a great coach and most importantly understands the balance here at Shawnigan.”

Compton has been the Assistant Hockey Director at Shawnigan Lake School since 2014, while also serving as an Assistant Coach, Skills Coach and Fitness Coach. He is also currently the Skills and Conditioning Coach for the Western Hockey League鈥檚 Victoria Royals.

While earning his B.Sc. in human performance, Compton played five seasons with the University of Ottawa Gee Gees, before going on to complete his master鈥檚 degree at the University of Victoria. Compton has consulted and worked with several NHL teams including the Dallas Stars, Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs, Ottawa Senators, Winnipeg Jets and the New York Rangers. For 15 seasons, he was the Fitness Coordinator for BC Hockey鈥檚 High Performance Men鈥檚 programs, and also co-authored the HP1 and HP2 course curriculum for Hockey Canada.

Chant returns as an Assistant Coach of the Midget Varsity team after serving in the same role last season, helping lead the team to a 麻豆传媒入口 Championship.

“David is moving back into his role as Assistant Coach with the Varsity team,鈥� said Cooper. 鈥淒avid is a great teacher and educator who offers our student athletes a valued connection to the classroom and ice. His communication skills have made him an important coach to his players and offers them a leader they can connect with.”

Prior to joining Shawnigan Lake School, Chant was the Head Coach of the Trinity College School varsity ice hockey team, guiding them to the school鈥檚 first senior boy鈥檚 hockey championship since 1949.

As a player, Chant played four seasons in the Ontario Hockey League with the Brampton Battalion and Barrie Colts before playing one season professionally in the East Coast Hockey League. Chant graduated with a degree in English from St. Mary鈥檚 University where he also played on the men鈥檚 ice hockey team. In 2006, Chant was named the recipient of the Dr. Randy Gregg Award, which is presented annually to the U Sports hockey player that exhibits outstanding achievement in hockey, academics and community involvement.

Chant completed master鈥檚 degree in English Literature at the University of Glasgow and then served as the Goalie Coach for the Queen鈥檚 University men鈥檚 ice hockey team while in PhD program in English.
