WHL CSSHL Alumni Win WHL Awards

Three Canadian Sports School League (CSSHL) alumni have won Western Hockey League (WHL) awards.

Connor Bedard, Ethan Peters, and Eli Zummack have all earned WHL honours for the 2020/21 season.

Bedard won the WHL Jim Piggot Memorial Trophy as the WHL Rookie of the Year, after previously being named to the WHL East Division All-Star team and capturing the divisions Rookie of the Year honours. After recording 181 points in 71 CSSHL games with West Van Academy, Bedard was selected first overall in the 2020 WHL Draft and became the first player in WHL history to receive Exceptional Status. This season the Regina Pats rookie had a league leading 28 point in 15 games before leaving the WHL Eastern Conference bubble to join Team Canada in Texas as they captured gold at the U18 World Championships. Bedard led all rookies in goals, assists, points and his 1.87 points per game was second among all WHL players.

Peters continues to add to his impressive academic resume, capturing the Daryl K. (Doc) Seaman Memorial Trophy as the WHL Scholastic Player of the Year award. Peters spent two seasons at Prairie Hockey Academy including their inaugural CSSHL campaign in 2018/19. In 35 games with the Prairie U16 Prep team Peters would post 18 points while earning CSSHL U16 All-Academic Team and CSSHL U16 WHL Scholastic Player of the Year honours. In his rookie season with the Oil Kings Peters played 23 games and had 1 goal and 4 assists and was named the WHL Central Division Scholastic Player of the Year.

During the 2020/21 season Zummack would produce at a point per game pace for the Spokane Chiefs as he tallied 22 points in 21 games, while committing just two minor penalties. This would earn Zummack the WHL U.S. Division Most Sportsmanlike Player honours, and the Brad Hornung Trophy, presented to the WHL鈥檚 Most Sportsmanlike Player. Zummack spent the 2014/15 season with Pursuit of Excellence (now Rink Hockey Academy Kelowna), captaining their U15 Prep team. In 22 regular season and playoff games Zummack scored 11 goals to go along with 14 assists. A second-round pick by the Red Deer Rebels in 2015, Zummack spent his entire WHL career with the Chiefs, finishing with 239 points in 254 games.
