GAME DAY RECAP: March 5, 2025

Delta Hockey Academy Black (7) vs Yale Hockey Academy (4) U15 Western Championships Quarter-Final

On Wednesday began the do-or-die knockout round games at the Western Championships, with all four U15 division I quarter-finals taking place early in the day, starting with Delta Black against Yale Hockey Academy. Delta Black fell at the hands of Northern Alberta Xtreme in their game yesterday, allowing six goals in the second period en route to an 8-5 loss. It stood to reason Delta Black would be extremely motivated to improve on that deficiency come their quarter-final, evident in their domination of the five-on-five play through the first forty minutes. Delta Black鈥檚 control of the game and suffocating defensive play in their own zone led to Yale Hockeu Academy finding themselves in a four-goal hole by the second intermission, with Brayden Allan in the Delta Black goal providing a largely impenetrable last line of defence. To Yale鈥檚 credit, they played their best period of the game in the third and scored thrice to make a game out of things, but couldn鈥檛 claw all the way back, falling 7-4. Cash Field (2G, 1A) scored the game-winner in the second, with Brayden Allan ultimately stopping 38 of 42 for the victory.听

Calgary International Hockey Academy (4) vs Edge School (7) U15 Western Championships Quarter-Final

While the first quarter-final featured one team coming up just short of the comeback, the second on Wednesday saw yet another squad fall into a big deficit from which they鈥檇 need to mount a comeback to stay alive. Calgary International Hockey Academy had a dream first period against Edge School, with Brik McCord Cooper (2G) opening the scoring after just two minutes. A pair of CIHA powerplay goals would follow, including another from Cooper. After one period, CIHA found themselves in a 3-0 lead, despite being outshot by an 11-6 margin through twenty minutes. Edge School鈥檚 game marginally improved to kick off the second period, with their big guns chipping in to get them back in the game, thanks to Brody Antignani (1G, 2A) helping set up Tyler O鈥橤orman (2G, 1A) for an early goal. CIHA managed to re-establish their three-goal lead through Liam Nycholat (1G, 1A) heading towards the end of the second period, but with just under four minutes to play, the game flipped on its head. O鈥橤orman popped up with his second, before merely two minutes later, Easton Armstrong (2G, 1A) pulled Edge within one goal.听

OHA Edmonton (3) vs BWC Academy (4/OT) U15 Western Championships Quarter-Final

Sixteen was the magic number Wednesday for BWC Academy in their pursuit of a semi-final spot at the U15 Western Championships on Wednesday, as it took Nathan DaSilva (2G, 2A) a mere 16 seconds of the first period to give BWC Academy the lead. OHA Edmonton didn鈥檛 stay behind for too long, though, and leveled the game up thanks to a bounce going their way, with the goal credit to Lane Huscroft (2G). The two sides traded goals in the second period, with BWC鈥檚 powerplay successful on both attempts, and Eric Prexler (1G, 3A) able to send things into the third period tied with less than two and a half minutes to play in the second. The third period belonged to the goaltenders, with both sides unable to break the tie, sending the contest into overtime. In overtime, DaSilva quickly grabbed possession of the puck for BWC, coasting behind his own net to set up. In an instant, DaSilva slung a 35-metre pass from behind his own net onto the stick of Wyatt Lowther at the opposing blue line. Lowther was in alone from there, scoring on a move to the forehand, ending overtime after a mere 16 seconds.

OHA Edmonton (6) vs Delta Hockey Academy (3) U17 Prep Western Championships

OHA Edmonton needed something resembling heroics in both of their previous two U17 Prep Western Championship games before their quarter-final against Delta Hockey Academy on Wednesday; Monday saw three goals in 76 seconds at the end of the third period to guide them to a 4-2 win over Yale, while Tuesday鈥檚 comeback victory was even more dramatic, with Keenan Fox鈥檚 hat-trick helping erase a four-goal deficit, and OHA Edmonton scoring eight in the second half of the game alone to earn the win. Wednesday鈥檚 knockout game against Delta was in no way a cakewalk, but early goals from Miles Coastes and Keenan Fox gave OHA Edmonton a lead they鈥檇 never relinquish. Cash Brebant (2G, 1A) popped up with a pair of third-period goals to help seal the deal, with OHA Edmonton advancing to the semis with the 6-3 win.

Ontario Hockey Academy (3) vs Bishop’s College School (4/OT) East U17

Griffin Fitzpatrick of Ontario Hockey Academy has time and time again helped keep his team in games all season long; he鈥檚 thrice eclipsed 60 saves in one game so far, and under immense pressure from Bishop鈥檚 College School on Wednesday, Fitzpatrick was having a superb afternoon. By the time the end of the third period drew near, Bishop鈥檚 had fallen behind and subsequently tied the game twice, heavily controlling the majority of the third. With just over two and a half minutes to play, Matus Vlcko managed to give Bishop鈥檚 their first lead of the hockey game, finally forcing a go-ahead goal behind Fitzpatrick. The hopes that the lead would be enough, however, were quickly dashed by virtue of a Marton Loschnig equalizer, sending the game into overtime. Bishop鈥檚 found their winner merely 39 seconds into the extra frame, with Jan Vladar playing hero, finding the game winner on the fifty-first Bishop鈥檚 College shot of the game.

Delta Hockey Academy White (5) vs Okanagan Hockey Academy (4) U15 Western Championships

Not a tremendous amount went right in Delta Whtie鈥檚 first two games of the Western Championships, with losses marred by discipline concerns; in Tuesday鈥檚 loss to Yale, Delta White conceded four powerplay goals on nine attempts, not helped by the fact they were unsuccessful on each of their own five powerplay chances. Halfway through Wednesday鈥檚 game against Okanagan Hockey Academy, two goals from Jake Dunlop seemed to have Delta White squarely in the driver鈥檚 seat, but as has been the case throughout the Western Championships so far, the lead was more fragile than it would appear. Mason Leibel (1G, 2A) scored at the end of the second before setting up Jake Gates early in the third to square the game at four, where it would stay until the end of regulation. Overtime magic came from Zhehan Zhao, who grabbed the puck, beat his man to the inside, and slotted it past Ethan Watson, giving Delta White their first victory of the Western Championships.听

North Shore Warriors (4) vs Northern Alberta Xtreme (8) U15 Western Championships Quarter-Final

Northern Alberta Xtreme had a game-changing 100-second stretch in the first half of the first period, during which they established a lead they鈥檇 never relinquish. Jared Ryan (3G), Erik Miller (1G, 1A), and Jett Evans (2G, 1A) scored three goals in less than two minutes to make it 3-0 NAX, built upon later in the first, with NAX at one time leading by four. Facing what looked like an unassailable deficit, North Shore didn鈥檛 roll over, and after Rex Norman (2G, 1A) scored at the end of the first, the Warriors were the better team for the majority of the second. After North Shore鈥檚 powerplay cashed in early, Cohen Waite (1G, 1A) struck later in the second period, pulling North Shore back within one. The threat of an equalizer lasted merely 96 seconds, though, thanks to the response from NAX鈥檚 Jared Ryan, who scored with less than two minutes left in the second to make it 5-3. Ryan wouldn鈥檛 be done there, wasting little third-period time before completing his hat-trick and sending NAX on their way to what would end up being a somewhat comfortable victory, doubling up North Shore 8-4.

Coeur d鈥橝lene Hockey Academy (1) vs St. George’s School (5) U17 Prep Division II Western Championships

The Western Championships thus far have had the momentum changes and comebacks you鈥檇 expect out of hockey at this age. With those trends have come some incredibly high-scoring hockey so far this week, with every team seemingly vulnerable to an opposing offensive explosion. A significant exception to that trend, however, has been the play of St. George鈥檚 School, whose defensive prowess has been evident all week, continuing into today鈥檚 battle with Coeur d鈥橝lene Hockey Academy. Jason Gao鈥檚 (2G) first-period goal gave St. George鈥檚 the lead, and while CDA would find a response through Cam Soenen, that would be the extent of their offensive output for the game. St. George鈥檚 goaltender Les Toth stopped 23 of 24 he faced, following up back-to-back victories in which he allowed merely two goals in each with a third-straight win. St. George鈥檚 powerplay did the bulk of their offensive damage, scoring four of their five goals on the man advantage, including the game-winner from Holden Tuttle en route to the 5-1 victory.听

Prairie Hockey Academy (2) vs Edge School (8) U17 Prep Western Championships

Edge School鈥檚 start to the U17 Prep Western Championships was far from ideal, with their opening game shootout loss followed up by a 5-2 defeat at the hands of SAHA. That gave even more weight in their game against Prairie Hockey Academy on Wednesday, looking not just to earn their first victory but looking to find some redemption after the loss to rivals SAHA. It took Izayah Zaharko (2G, 2A) less than a minute to help Edge hit the front, a lead they鈥檇 build upon shortly thereafter through Antonio Cazac (2G, 2A). Prairie did well to generate chances, throwing fifty shots at the Edge net by the time the final buzzer sounded, but couldn鈥檛 muster enough grade 鈥淎鈥 opportunities to give Edge School a serious run for their money. The four points apiece from Zaharko and Cazac led the way, with Edge ultimately victorious 8-2.

Pilot Mound Hockey Academy (4) vs STAR Hockey Academy (2) U17 Prep Division II Western Championships Quarter-Final

STAR Hockey Academy鈥檚 offence was amongst the most potent in the Western Championships heading into Wednesday, scoring six goals apiece in wins over the Notre Dame Hounds and ISA, impressively having done the bulk of their damage at five-on-five. PMHA split their first two games, following up a defeat at the hands of the North Shore Warriors with a victory over Wenatchee, but would need to improve defensively to handle the high-flying STAR offence. PMHA goaltender Barrett Hayes stopped every shot he faced in the first half of the hockey game, and eventually, the skaters in front of him returned the favour, with Gavin Noseworthy (1G, 1A) giving PMHA the lead in the second period. Ewen Willers kept rolling, scoring his seventh point of the Western Championships so far to tie the game at one, but PMHA would score again to take the lead into the third period. Luke Adam (1G, 1A) cashed in on the late second-period powerplay to make it 2-1 before PMHA would take the game鈥檚 first two-goal lead early in the third. Collin Friedrich鈥檚 goal pushed the game out of STAR鈥檚 reach, with PMHA eventually winning 4-2, limiting the red-hot STAR offence to two goals on 28 shots in the win.

Notre Dame Hounds (3) vs Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (4/OT) U15 Division II Western Championships Quarter-Final

The Notre Dame Hounds and Pacific Coast Hockey Academy both left it all on the ice Wednesday with a spot in the U15 Division II semi-finals on the line, evidenced by the outpouring of offensive effort by both sides when they found themselves in a deficit. Brayden Lindsay (2G) opened the scoring in the first for PCHA, only to have the game levelled by Jax Baumuller before the break. Dominik Chartrand鈥檚 goal in the second provided the Hounds with their first lead, but they couldn鈥檛 build on it, and Lindsay鈥檚 second of the game squared things up again. The game remained tied at two deep into the third period, when with just over two and a half minutes remaining, Hudson Elke scored to give PCHA a lead. Notre Dame didn鈥檛 have long to find an equalizer, and late in the game, it looked like they may run out of time. With an extra attacker out, though, Ryder Fiddler gloved down the puck at the side of the net and cashed in to send the game into overtime. For the bulk of the ten-minute extra period, a shootout looked the most likely outcome, prior to Kaz Westcott tucking away PCHA鈥檚 winner, sending the Sea Devils through by virtue of the 4-3 victory.

Notre Dame Hounds (4) vs Shawnigan Lake School (3) U17 Prep Division II Western Championships Quarter-Final

After an opener in which Notre Dame had their hearts broken by an Ewen Willers overtime goal for STAR, they鈥檇 struggle for offence against St. George鈥檚, ultimately taking just a single point into their quarterfinal against Shawnigan, who conversely won both of their two Western Championship games thus far. Shawnigan were far the better team in the first period, making good on their control of the game, outshooting Notre Dame 18-7 and outscoring them 2-1. The Hounds kept the game close, growing into the contest more and more as things proceeded, eventually making good on their positive play. Shyloh Benko and Logan Arnold scored late in the second to give Notre Dame the lead through two, and while Ryder Kerr scored on a third-period powerplay to drag the game back to level, Michael Camponi played hero. Notre Dame took the contest 4-3 thanks to Camponi鈥檚 late game-winner.听

BWC Academy (4) vs North Shore Warriors (5/OT) U17 Prep Division II Western Championships Quarter-Final

Arguably more so than any other sport, hockey relies on contributions from an entire team to experience success. That fact makes it all the more impressive when you see one player put a team on his back and single-handedly drag his squad to victory. Such was the case from North Shore鈥檚 Lucas Lekakis (4G) on Wednesday, whose four goals included the overtime winner in the Warriors鈥 5-4 win over BWC Academy. Lekakis made it 1-0 on an early powerplay, 2-2 in the second period, and gave his team a 4-3 lead in the third. Logan Fuller scored merely seven seconds after Lekakis鈥 go-ahead goal to tie the game. The North Shore winner came merely 84 seconds into the ten-minute overtime period, with Lekakis鈥 relentlessness in front of goal earning him his fourth of the day and sixth of the Western Championships already.

Prairie Hockey Academy (1) vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (5) U15 Division II Western Championships Quarter-Final

RHA Kelowna booked their spot in the U15 Division II Semi-Finals with a 5-1 win over Prairie. Oliver Barras scored just 34 seconds in and Trent Keenan added his first of the Championships less than five minutes later as RHA Kelowna raced out to a 2-0 lead. Jakub Palmer got Prairie on the board midway through the period but Dexter Labrecque (2G, 1A) restored the two goal lead 4:20 later. Labrecque and Reed Witham scored 1:31 apart in the second to increase the RHA Kelowna advantage to 5-1 before Griffin Prairie Chicken (45/46) and Conner Aldag (28/33) kept clean sheets in the third period.听

Yale Hockey Academy (2) vs Northern Alberta Xtreme (3/OT) U17 Prep Western Championships

In both teams last game of the season it came down to the final minutes of overtime as Asher Halliday scored his first of the Championships to give NAX the 3-2 win. Lucas Fenrich gave Yale an opening period lead just 1:01 into the hockey game. Seth Castronuovo doubled the lead midway through the second with his second of the Championships. Jackson Tetreault (1G, 1A) got NAX on the board and within one late in the period and Bronsyn Mouille scored on the power play 1:19 into the third to tie the game. Cam Hoose (31/33) and Carson Lang (32/35) kept the game deadlocked at 2-2 through the remainder of regulation, forcing overtime. Halliday would score the game winner with 1:17 left in the extra frame.听

South Alberta Hockey Academy (1) vs Okanagan Hockey Academy (2) U17 Prep Western Championships

In a must win game Brennan Finke gave SAHA the lead just 2:17 into the first with his third of the Championships. That lead would hold until the third as Linden Sobocan (29/30) and Hunter Zawislak (27/29) kept clean sheets through the second period. Maxx Parfitt broke through for OHA 13:54 into the second, scoring his fourth goal in three games. SAHA would need a late regulation goal to give themselves any chance of moving on to the semi鈥檚, but it was Trey Tourigny for OHA who broke the SAHA hearts, beating Zawislak five-hole with 1:33 remaining.听

RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (3) vs St. George’s School (2) U15 Division II Western Championships Quarter-Final

RHA Winnipeg opened the scoring 4:40 in as Ryder Olford (2G) scored his first of the Championships. St. George鈥檚 would respond with goals 58 seconds apart as Alan Qiu and Gavin Panaich each scored their first of the Championships. RHA Winnipeg would find an equaliser late in the second as Braedan Gilbertson scored with 2:04 remaining in the period. Olford鈥檚 second of the game 5:21 into the third would be the game winner for RHA Winnipeg as they punched their ticket to the semi finals. Haize Brightnose (27/29) and Hudson Waddell (30/33) were in net for their respective teams.听

RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (3) vs Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (1) U17 Prep Western Championships

With both teams’ hopes of moving on to the semi finals having already been crushed there was nothing left to play for but pride Wednesday evening. Brady Keith opened the scoring for RHA Winnipeg 1:03 into the game with his second of the Championships. Knox Burton and Keegan Bragnalo added power play goals 57 seconds apart early in the second period to give their team a 3-0 advantage. Jack MacMillan would get Pacific Coast on the board 5:02 into the third with a power play goal of his own, ending the Brady Robert (26/27) shutout bid. However, RHA Winnipeg ultimately held on for the 3-1 win in their final game of the season. Ander Reyes (31/34) made 31 saves in the loss.听

Calgary International Hockey Academy (3) vs RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (1) U17 Prep Western Championships

With first place in Pool B on the line Aedan McCarry (1G, 1A) scored on the power play 7:27 into the game to give CIHA an early lead. Another power play goal, this time from Jacob Balaberda (1G, 2A), doubled the CIHA lead midway through the second period. The CIHA power play continued to click in the third as Mason Moran scored his third of the Championships 6:25 into the third. Preston Kelly-Paquet would give RHA Kelowna life with a power play goal of his own but Ethan Mann (41/42) finished with 41 saves to secure the CIHA victory. With the win CIHA took Pool B and first place at the conclusion of the Round Robin. Despite the loss, RHA Kelowna finished fourth in the Round Robin, giving them the ‘Wild Card’ spot and setting up a rematch against CIHA in the semi-finals.
