GAME DAY RECAP: March 6, 2025

Delta Hockey Academy Black (4) vs Edge School (8) U15 Western Championships Semi-Final

An explosion of second-period offence helped book Edge School鈥檚 ticket to the U15 Western Championships Final, with their 20 second-period shots on goal ultimately providing them with five goals, enough to see them over Delta Hockey Academy Black. Cash Field scored the first period鈥檚 only goal for Delta Black with under two minutes to go, giving his team a 1-0 lead, but once they returned from the intermission, everything had changed. Brody Antignani (2G, 1A) cashed in with the equalizer in the second period鈥檚 first minute, and from there, it felt like Edge School couldn鈥檛 do anything wrong in the offensive zone. Luke Bodtker (1G, 2A), Charlie Usher (1G, 1A), Jackson Saskiw, and Kyden Bartole (1G, 1A) added second-period goals to give Edge a 5-1 lead through two, a lead that appeared to be safe in Edge School鈥檚 hands. That, however, wasn鈥檛 the case, and within 2:10 of the third period, the four-goal advantage was suddenly one, thanks to three quick Delta Black goals flipping the game on its head. Down 5-4, Delta Black continued their pressure, but a penalty six and a half minutes into the third ended up massively significant. On the powerplay, Edge School regained their two-goal lead, with Tyler O鈥橤orman finding the back of the net on the man advantage. At 6-4, Antignani would add another, with Edge ultimately prevailing 8-4 to book their ticket to the final.

STAR Hockey Academy (3) vs BWC Academy (4/OT) U15 Prep Western Championships

Thursday morning for BWC Academy brought them a STAR Hockey Academy team whose offensive effectiveness in this game was limited to less than a full period, but despite that, STAR did well to stay in the game against a BWC team who outshot and outchanced their opposition throughout. BWC Academy鈥檚 control of the first half of the game was evidenced by their two-goal lead to that point, but once midway had come and gone, STAR would take their chance to get back in the game, thanks to the goal from Lincoln Angst (2G). With the surge of momentum gained by the late second-period goal, STAR came out of the third period gates strong, controlling the play and successfully cashing in on the offensive chances that followed. Angst鈥檚 second of the game was followed but the go-ahead goal from Nathan Langhelm, giving STAR their first lead of the game. BWC hadn鈥檛 yet trailed, and once they did, it seemed to awaken the dormant offence, and Cohen Baker (1G, 1A) managed to find a response just 69 seconds after STAR had gone in front. The game remained tied into overtime, where the winner was found by BWC鈥檚 Logan Henry, whose shot trickled through Alexander Petukkov and barely over the goal line, giving BWC Academy the victory.听

Northern Alberta Xtreme (1) vs BWC Academy (0) U15 Western Championships Semi-Final

By the time the third period rolled around, it was obvious that Thursday鈥檚 game between BWC Academy and Northern Alberta Xtreme was going to be decided by heroics; specifically, either the heroics of BWC goaltender Zayden Maclean, or the heroics of whichever Northern Alberta Xtreme players finally managed to get the puck behind him. Nearly fifty-eight scoreless minutes of hockey passed, and in those fifty-eight minutes, NAX had thrown everything possible at the BWC net without dividends being paid. With just over two to play in the third, an NAX counter-attack led by Keatyn Devlin eventually led to an available rebound being cashed in by Emmett Abel. The goal stood as the only one of the game, with NAX advancing to the U15 Western Championship Final by virtue of the one-goal win.听

Indigenous Sports Academy (4) vs Wenatchee Wild Hockey Academy (2) U17 Prep Division II Western Championships Consolation

Indigenous Hockey Academy鈥檚 U17 Prep Division II Western Championships campaign was far from what they鈥檇 have considered ideal; a pair of 6-2 losses landed them in the consolation game, where the Wenatchee Wild lay in wait. ISA took the game to Wenatchee from the outset, and through two periods, they鈥檇 control the vast majority of proceedings. Carsen Chipesia and Junior Sun had the goals through two, taking the lead into the third, where Wenatchee would find their pushback. Cooper Miller鈥檚 early goal dragged them within one, but throughout the third, an equalizer eluded the Wild. Eason Bauer (1G, 1A) and Ryder Cardinal (1G, 2A) cashed in with a goal and an assist each in the third period to help ISA over the line.听

Mount Academy (4/SO) vs King’s Edgehill School (3) East U18

Mount Academy鈥檚 battle with King鈥檚 Edgehill School had plenty of weight behind it; last weekend, KES downed Mount Academy twice, the latter in the form of an 8-2 pasting. In the effort to avenge the heavy defeat, the first period went incredibly well for Mount Academy, with goals from Justin Hughes (1G, 2A) and James Martin sending them into the break with a two-goal lead. KES pushed back hard in the second, negating Mount Academy鈥檚 first period with two goals of their own, with Alex Doyle鈥檚 (1G, 1A) tying goal sending the game into the third period square. KES took their first lead after 92 seconds of the third period, but the goal coming early in the period meant Mount Academy had plenty of time to work their way back. Ilia Sokurenko鈥檚 powerplay goal evened the game at three, and after an overtime in which the goaltenders saved everything they faced, the shootout would decide things between these two teams for the second time in three meetings. Cohen Paul, who had a pair of assists in the first period, played winner in the shootout, helping Mount Academy to the victory just days after they were drummed by the same King鈥檚-Edgehill group听

Shawnigan Lake School (2) vs Notre Dame Hounds (5) U15 Prep Division II Western Championships

Shawnigan鈥檚 pursuit of victory on Thursday was, seemingly, in a good spot through twenty minutes of play; shots on goal were 13-12, and they led 1-0 through Carson Preet鈥檚 (2G) goal. Shawnigan鈥檚 lead lasted less than five second-period minutes, and once Notre Dame found their way back into the game, they wouldn鈥檛 look back. Two second-period goals from Kashton Masney gave them a quick lead before Liam Bird and Duke Lesnar capped off Notre Dame鈥檚 four-goal second period. The Hounds would only solidify their lead in the third, with Mika Richard鈥檚 goal making it 5-1 early en route to what eventually ended up being a 5-2 win.听

Pilot Mound Hockey Academy (4/OT) vs St. George’s School (3) U17 Prep Division II Western Championships Semi-Final

Pilot Mound Hockey Academy opened their U17 Prep Division II Western Championships with a loss, making their path to the final an uphill battle from there. Despite that, they鈥檇 win twice to secure their spot in the semi-finals, where St. George鈥檚 School awaited, with their undefeated record very much intact. Through nearly 57 minutes of their game on Thursday, St. George鈥檚 showed why they were the favourites; they outscored, outshot, and out-chanced their PMHA opponents, holding a 3-1 third-period lead. PMHA, however, never stopped their fight, and with under three to play, dragged themselves back within one through Brody Wytinck. The goal brought PMHA within one, and with 74 seconds on the clock, Luke Adam would find the tying goal, with his second of the Western Championships forcing the game into overtime. Nearly the entirety of the ten-minute overtime period had come and gone, and with a shootout looking all but inevitable, PMHA would find a game-winner through Collin Friedrich. The goal came with merely two seconds left in overtime, capping off PMHA鈥檚 come-from-behind victory and helping Pilot Mound beyond the semi-finals.听

Notre Dame Hounds (1) vs North Shore Warriors (7) U17 Prep Division II Western Championships Semi-Final

North Shore鈥檚 determination to reach the U17 Prep Division II Western Championships Final was evidenced by their start, as within sixteen first-period seconds, Tobin Schaefer (2G, 3A) gave the Warriors the lead. Chase Vossenaar (2G, 3A) scored on the power play nine minutes later, and from there, North Shore never looked back. Schaefer and Vossenaar would earn five points apiece by the end of the game, helping the Warriors make short work of their semi-final, ultimately prevailing 7-1 over the Notre Dame Hounds.听

North Shore Warriors (5) vs Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (3) U15 Prep Division II Western Championships

The North Shore Warriors and Pacific Coast Hockey Academy truly played a game that either team easily could have taken victory from on Thursday, and in such situations, it鈥檚 often fine margins that make the difference. The difference came with PCHA ahead by a goal in the third period, but with the North Shore Warriors pushing for an equalizer, they鈥檇 get helped out by a pair of PCHA minor penalties coming less than ninety seconds apart. They wouldn鈥檛 cash in on the five-on-three, but seconds after the first penalty expired, Sean Murphy found the back of the net from the point, dragging North Shore back to level. The game marched towards the third period鈥檚 end tied at three, but less than two minutes from time, Riley Taylor found the go-ahead goal, giving North Shore the lead. William Thompson scored into the empty net to seal it, helping North Shore prevail over the Sea Devils in dramatic fashion.

Prairie Hockey Academy (5/SO) vs OHA Edmonton (4) U17 Prep Western Championships Semi-Final

OHA Edmonton鈥檚 U17 Prep squad has fought hard throughout their CSSHL season, ultimately finishing fourth place in the regular season standings and boasting a forward trio who all finished in the top eight of the league-wide regular season point scorers. That forward trio all came to play for OHA Edmonton against Prairie Hockey Academy, with Jaggar John (1G, 1A), Cash Brebant, and Keenan Fox (1G, 1A) combining for five points in the second and third periods. Fox scored 24 seconds into the third period to give OHA Edmonton a 4-2 lead, and to that point in the game, it looked beyond Prairie Hockey Academy. That was prior to Kade Kahovec鈥檚 goal providing a lifeline, and once doubt was sewn, Prairie would strike again through Ethan Unger, forcing overtime. Come the shootout, Drake Mooney prevailed against both shooters he faced, and goals from Luke Pratte and Jamie Kirwan saw Prairie to an upset 5-4 shootout win.听

RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (7) vs Calgary International Hockey Academy (0) U17 Prep Western Championships Semi-Final

RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna made a statement on Thursday, punching their ticket to the U17 Prep Western Championships Final with an adamantly dominant performance, defeating the Calgary International Hockey Academy by seven goals. An explosion of second-period offence saw RHA Kelowna strike with three goals in less than five minutes to help stretch the game beyond CIHA鈥檚 reach. Ethan Fidelak鈥檚 two goals led the way, and even though the scoreline was as slanted as it became, RHA Kelowna鈥檚 Asher Netherton stopped all 38 shots he faced to earn the shutout and win.

RINK Hockey Academy Kelowna (10) vs Pacific Coast Hockey Academy (6) U15 Division II Western Championships Semi-Final

A high scoring affair saw RHA Kelowna punch their ticket to the U15 Division II Final with a 10-6 win over Pacific Coast. Harrison Sharman (3G) and Kyle Schierling (2G) combined for 5 of the 10 RHA Kelowna goals to lead the offence while Griffin Prairie Chicken (31/37) made 31 saves in net for the win. Brayden Lindsay (3G) led the way for Pacific Coast with a hat-trick but his individual effort wasn鈥檛 enough to overcome the RHA Kelowna output.听

RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (6/OT) vs STAR Hockey Academy (5) U15 Division II Western Championships Semi-Final

A busy first saw Brayden Bardwell (2G) and Camden Freeman scored for STAR, while Jack Arseniuk (2G) and Kelson Hawreluik (2G, 1A) countered for RHA Winnipeg. Eli Wasylyk gave RHA Winnipeg their first lead of the game 3:32 into the second with a shorthanded marker. The STAR special teams would begin to click as Seve Paladino (1G, 3A) scored on the power play and Benton Fuller scored shorthanded 1:28 later as STAR regained the lead. Bardwell would double that lead with 4:44 left in the period. STAR would run into penalty trouble in the third, leaving the door open for RHA Winnipeg to strike twice on the power play as Hawreluik and Arseniuk each scored their second of the game to send it to overtime. In the 10 minute overtime, Aiden Christie would beat Henry Price (37/43) off the rush to complete the comeback and send RHA Winnipeg through to the U15 Division II Championships. Haize Brightnose (54/59) made 54 saves in net for the win.听

Yale Hockey Academy (2) vs Delta Hockey Academy (3/SO) U15 Prep Western Championships

Defenseman Eli Vickers opened the scoring 4:35 into the first with a power play goal for Delta. Michael Kuzik would even the score with just 10 seconds left in the opening period. Peter Banicevic restored the Delta lead 1:51 into the second but Alex Li tied the game midway through the frame. Jack Utsunomiya (50/52) and Gavin Craig (37/39) kept clean sheets in the third and overtime to send the game to a shootout where Utsunomiya stopped all three Yale shooters and defenseman Ryker Doka scored in the second round to give Delta the 3-2 win in their opening game of the 2025 CSSHL Western Championships.听

RINK Hockey Academy Winnipeg (1) vs Northern Alberta Xtreme (6) U15 Prep Western Championships

The number 1 seed NAX started off their 2025 CSSHL Western Championships with a 6-1 win over 10 seed RHA Winnipeg. Brady Filmon gave RHA Winnipeg the initial lead 4:04 into the game but defenseman Nash Weyland (2G) responded for NAX 1:15 later. Easton Arndt (1G, 1A) and Weyland would scored 32 seconds part at the end of the first to give NAX a 3-1 advantage heading into the intermission. The NAX blueline continued to provide offence in the second as Nolan Wolitsk scored on the power play to extend the lead. Forward Kalen Miles (1G, 2A) added an even strength marker in the second and Brady Ondrus (1G, 1A) scored shorthanded in the third to round out the scoring. Dawson Sheehan (20/21) and Haize Brightnose (45/51) were in net for their respective teams.听
